In a new short webisode celebrating the re-release of season 20 of Doctor Who, Tegan Jovanka (played by Janet Fielding) has a long-awaited and surprising reunion with her fellow companion Nyssa (played by Sarah Sutton). The webisode also introduces an old foe. Fielding and Sutton first joined the sci-fi series in 1981 during the era of Tom Baker's Fourth Doctor. They continued to be part of the TARDIS during the tenure of the Fifth Doctor, played by Peter Davison, until 1983 and 1984 respectively. While Sutton has not yet returned to the main series, Fielding reprised her role as Tegan in 2022's "The Power of the Doctor", alongside Jodie Whittaker's Fifteenth Doctor. This webisode serves as a teaser ahead of David Tennant's return as The Doctor and was featured in the Doctor Who trailer for the home media re-release of season 20.
The webisode titled "The Passenger" appears to continue Tegan's story after the events of "The Power of the Doctor". In this episode, a mysterious text about the TARDIS leads to an unexpected reunion with Nyssa. They had previously separated on the Terminus space station in 1983's "Terminus". Although the reunion seems joyful, it soon becomes apparent that Tegan is still haunted by the evil alien entity, The Mara.
Who Are Tegan and Nyssa?
Tegan and Nyssa hail from contrasting backgrounds. Nyssa, the daughter of Traken consul Tremas (played by Anthony Ainley), had her father’s body taken over by The Master. On the other hand, Tegan, an air hostess, unexpectedly found herself aboard the TARDIS during the Doctor's final adventure with Baker referred to as "Logopolis". Despite their disparate origins, both Tegan and Nyssa joined forces with the Doctor in confronting the Cybermen, The Mara, and The Master. Throughout their journeys, they grew closer and shared the anguish of losing their fellow companion, Adric (portrayed by Matthew Waterhouse). Later, Nyssa elected to leave the TARDIS in order to contribute to a noble cause at Terminus, a reputable medical facility. Similarly, Tegan chose to distance herself from the Doctor after experiencing a horrifying encounter with the Daleks in "Resurrection of the Daleks".
After nearly 40 years, Tegan was reunited with the Time Lord to put an end to a frightening alliance involving The Master (Sacha Dhawan), the Cybermen, and the Daleks. Despite feeling abandoned by the Doctor after their last encounter, Tegan found closure with the Time Lord and formed new friendships with other companions through a support group consisting of the Doctor's past friends. In "Farewell, Sarah Jane", a tribute to Elizabeth Sladen and her character, Russell T Davies established Tegan and Nyssa as a couple.
The audience eagerly anticipates "The Collection" announcement trailers of Doctor Who, which not only reveal the long-awaited restoration of the show's classic seasons but also allow fans to revisit their beloved characters through short webisodes. Consequently, "The Passenger" promises to be a pleasant surprise, showcasing the much-awaited on-screen reunion of Tegan and Nyssa as they confront The Mara. This encounter also highlights Tegan's personal growth since her time in the classic series and her return in 2022.
