Shawn Mendes' romantic journey has always been in the spotlight as he ventures into the realm of dating while being a public figure. However, it was only when he embarked on a relationship with Camila Cabello that the "Stitches" singer began to open up about his personal life. After five years of friendship, Mendes and the former Fifth Harmony member finally made their love public in 2019.
Mendes passionately expressed how his relationship with Cabello served as a driving force for his career. In his 2020 Netflix documentary, "In Wonder," he shared, "Whenever my song comes on the radio, I can't help but think, 'It's all about you. All of them – they've always been about you.'" Cabello, confused, asked him to elaborate, and he clarified, "I mean, every song I've ever written has been about you." Despite this, Mendes admitted that his songs didn't fully encapsulate the depth of his emotions for his former girlfriend.
"I believe it's similar to the experience of trying to capture the beauty of a moon or stars with your iPhone camera, only to realize that it doesn't do justice to their magnificence," he expressed. "There's a sense that some things are meant to be experienced in the moment, without the need for documentation. It's a personal and intimate connection that is meant just for us."
As for Cabello, she revealed how therapy played a pivotal role in deepening her connection with Mendes.
"We have a very open and honest relationship, which is why we have such a strong trust in each other," she shared in her cover story for Glamour in October 2021. "There are times when I'll vent or rant about something, and he'll suggest, 'Have you spoken to X about it?' And I'll admit, 'No, I need to process it first.' And he does the same for me. Even just being able to say, 'I'm sorry for being distant or snappy. I'm struggling and feeling anxious.' That level of transparency really makes a difference."
Just a month later, fans were taken aback when they announced their split. "Hey guys, we've decided to end our romantic relationship, but our love for each other as individuals is stronger than ever," they wrote in a joint statement on Instagram in November 2021. "We began our relationship as best friends and will continue to be best friends. We truly appreciate your support from the start and moving forward. Camila and Shawn."
Mendes shared his thoughts on the positive impact of being in love on his overall perspective on life. He emphasized how experiencing love for the first time provided him with a sense of support and stability. In an interview with ELLE in November 2020, he described it as a grounding feeling, where even if everything else were to disappear, he would still be okay. This newfound perspective allowed him to approach his passion for music with a renewed sense of purpose and enjoyment. He expressed that if he were not able to fully embrace and appreciate his work, he would prefer to spend his time simply watching movies with his loved one.
The musician, who has since been linked to Jocelyne Miranda and Sabrina Carpenter, has opted out of publicly addressing his dating history.

Shawn Mendes’ Dating History: Hailey Bieber, Camila Cabello and More of His Famous Exes and Flings
Looking for The One! Shawn Mendes' love life has made headlines over the years as he navigates dating in the public eye.
Mendes, the singer of "Stitches," had largely kept his personal life private until he entered into a relationship with Camila Cabello. They made their relationship public in 2019 after being friends for five years.
During that time, Mendes expressed how Cabello had greatly influenced his career. In his 2020 Netflix documentary, In Wonder, he shared, "Whenever my song comes on the radio or something, I think, 'Everything's about you. They've always been about you.' And she's like, 'What do you mean?' Like, 'They're all about you. Every song I've ever written.'"
The singer of "In My Blood" acknowledged that his songs fail to truly convey the emotions he had for his former girlfriend. He likened it to the difficulty of capturing the beauty of a moon or stars with an iPhone camera, where the resulting photo does not do justice to the actual experience. He emphasized that some moments are meant to be cherished privately, without the need for external validation or documentation.
Cabello discussed how therapy has strengthened her connection with Mendes, emphasizing their transparency and trust in each other. She revealed that they have open conversations, sharing their frustrations and seeking support from each other. Cabello mentioned that they both encourage each other to communicate with others about their concerns and actively apologize and explain their emotions when they are feeling distant or anxious. This level of honesty and openness greatly benefits their relationship.
Mendes expressed his gratitude for the positive impact love had on his perspective, prior to separating from the "Havana" performer.
The musician, who has been romantically linked to Jocelyne Miranda and Sabrina Carpenter, has chosen not to publicly discuss his past relationships.

Mendes revealed during a fan Q&A in 2017 that his personal experiences frequently serve as inspiration for his music. He mentioned having had a two-year relationship, which led him to write songs about his girlfriend. However, he also acknowledged that he often writes about love in general, even if he may not fully comprehend it. Despite this, he believes that he has a strong grasp on the subject and finds it immensely enjoyable to explore, considering love to be the most potent emotion a person can experience. Consequently, he feels capable of creating endless songs about this profound sentiment.

Hailey Bieber
After ending her relationship with Justin Bieber, Hailey Bieber (formerly known as Baldwin) was rumored to be dating the musician behind the hit song "Summer of Love" towards the end of 2017. The couple even made an appearance together at the 2018 Met Gala. However, it was Shawn Mendes who eventually addressed the speculation surrounding their relationship.
He described it as a state of uncertainty, not even worthy of a title, when he spoke to Rolling Stone in November 2018. He expressed admiration for her, not only for her physical beauty but also for her kind-heartedness. While acknowledging his foolishness for not pursuing a relationship with her, he recognized that matters of the heart cannot be controlled. Meanwhile, Hailey reunited with Justin and they exchanged vows in November 2018.

After years of friendship, Mendes and Cabello confirmed that they were dating in July 2019, but called it quits two years later.
According to an exclusive source in November 2021, their friends believe that their relationship suffered from the pressure of too much attention too soon. This constant scrutiny, especially directed towards Shawn, about the seriousness of their relationship and the possibility of engagement, became overwhelming and irritating for them.
In April 2023, speculation of a reunion between the exes arose when videos emerged on social media showing them kissing at the Coachella Music Festival. However, just two months later, an exclusive source informed Us that Cabello chose to once again end the relationship with Mendes.
