Unveiling Sabine Wren's Untold Jedi Journey Before Ahsoka

Discover the untold story of Sabine Wren's forgotten Jedi mentor, years before Ahsoka's involvement Unveiling the parallel journey of Sabine and Kanan, this article unveils a hidden chapter in the Star Wars universe

Warning! This article contains spoilers for Ahsoka episode 3.

Summary

There is no mention of Kanan Jarrus, Sabine Wren's first Jedi Master, in the Ahsoka show, even though he played a crucial role in her training with the Darksaber and they have a shared history. This omission is particularly noticeable given their joint efforts to find Kanan's missing Padawan, Ezra, and their prior acquaintance.

The show's failure to mention Kanan's name, despite the parallels between Ahsoka and Sabine's training and emotional journeys, is a glaring oversight that needs to be addressed in due course.

In the Ahsoka show, Sabine Wren, Ahsoka Tano's former apprentice, has yet to be acknowledged as being trained by her first Jedi Master years before. As a vital member of the Ghost crew in Star Wars Rebels, Sabine played a crucial role in the battle against the Empire on Lothal. Additionally, as a Mandalorian, she has a significant place in Mandalore's illustrious history and has even wielded the prestigious Darksaber. Now, in the Ahsoka show, Sabine has reunited with Ahsoka to resume her Jedi training, embarking on a joint journey to locate the missing Jedi Ezra Bridger and the exiled Grand Admiral Thrawn.

Ahsoka's initial three episodes reveal that Sabine had neglected her training after separating from Ahsoka before the events of the show. In Ahsoka's first episode, her lightsaber duel with Force-wielding mercenary Shin Hati proved to be more challenging than expected, considering Sabine's past experience with the Darksaber. Fortunately, Ahsoka and Sabine have resumed their training together. However, a scene in Ahsoka episode 3 brings attention to a notable oversight in the show thus far.

Ahsoka Hasn't Even Mentioned Sabine's First Master

In Star Wars Rebels season 3, Sabine receives instruction in wielding the Darksaber from Jedi Knight Kanan Jarrus, a survivor of Order 66 and a member of the Ghost crew. Despite lacking a natural affinity for the Force, Sabine learns to master the legendary blade under Kanan's tutelage and is able to effectively use it in combat, even against experienced Jedi like Kanan himself. Her time spent learning about the Darksaber with Kanan has a profound impact on her, not only teaching her proper lightsaber techniques but also revealing her inner strength and potential to represent the Mandalorian people and reconcile with her own troubled past. Kanan's teachings become a catalyst for Sabine's significant emotional growth.

However, despite Kanan's significant role in Sabine's journey, his name is never mentioned in Ahsoka. This omission appears to contradict the narrative, as Sabine experiences frustration with her progress in a similar manner to the "Trials of the Darksaber" episode of Star Wars Rebels. The absence of any reference to Kanan is particularly conspicuous given their joint search for their missing comrade, Ezra, and the fact that Ahsoka and Kanan had a history together dating back to the Clone Wars. It is highly unlikely that Sabine has neglected to inform Ahsoka about her lessons with Kanan regarding the Darksaber during their Jedi training. As a result, the question arises as to why Kanan's name is not mentioned now, particularly when Sabine's lessons in the third episode of Ahsoka directly parallel one of Kanan's most pivotal moments of growth.

Ahsoka Is Paralleling Sabine & Kanan

In Ahsoka's third episode, she employs the "Zatochi" Jedi training technique to teach Sabine. Sabine's vision is obscured by a mask, and she must learn to anticipate Ahsoka's movements. This scene mirrors a similar situation in which Kanan must regain trust in himself and the Force after being blinded during a duel with Maul in the finale of Star Wars Rebels season 2. Like Sabine, Kanan becomes frustrated with his lack of vision and struggles with doubts. These parallels between the characters are not limited to this instance.

Additionally, in Ahsoka's second episode, Sabine cuts her hair as a symbolic act of spiritual cleansing and releasing her emotional burden. This can be directly compared to a scene in Rebels where Kanan cuts his hair before embarking on a dangerous mission to rescue Hera Syndulla from the clutches of the Empire. It is worth noting that Kanan's absence in Ahsoka's discussion of these parallels is a notable oversight. While there may be concerns about alienating casual audiences unfamiliar with Star Wars Rebels, Kanan plays a significant role in the stories of Sabine, Hera, Ezra, and even Ahsoka. Therefore, his impact should eventually be acknowledged in Ahsoka.
