Summary
Director Michael Dinner suggests that there may be a potential for a "third chapter" for the beloved character Raylan Givens in the acclaimed series Justified. The revival of Justified, titled City Primeval, has received positive reviews from critics and currently holds a remarkable 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
With Quentin Tarantino's involvement in City Primeval and his established history with Elmore Leonard's works, he emerges as a possible director for a future installment of Justified. Michael Dinner, the director of Justified: City Primeval, has discussed the potential for another series centered around the character Raylan Givens, hinting at a potential "third chapter." Originally based on Elmore Leonard's writings, the original Justified series premiered on FX in 2010 and quickly gained critical acclaim, as demonstrated by its impressive 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes for the first season. After an eight-year hiatus from screens, Justified returns with the limited series City Primeval, featuring Timothy Olyphant reprising his role as the righteous deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens.
Raylan Givens' return in the Justified revival has garnered positive responses, earning a 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Looking ahead, Dinner, the episode director and co-showrunner, believes there is still more to explore with Olyphant's character. In the space below, Dinner shares his thoughts:
Here's the thing: our intention was not to simply revisit the past, but to capture the same essence and enjoyment we experienced while working on the show previously. And I believe everyone involved, from the writers to the actors, especially Tim, walked away from this experience feeling incredibly satisfied. I've mentioned it before, but I view the original six years of Justified as merely the first act in this character's life. This new story is distinct, as it revolves around the concept of not being able to return home, but in a different context. We pick up the narrative roughly ten years later, presenting an existential exploration within these eight episodes. The road ahead for Raylan Givens is significantly shorter than the road behind him, and we aim to tackle the complexities of navigating this new terrain. It's a relatable theme that we all face, don't we?
But I do believe there is a third chapter of success in store for us if the audience embraces it. We eagerly await the unfolding of events in the next couple of weeks and if FX expresses interest in continuing, both Tim, Dave, and myself would be more than willing to embark on this journey. Graham, despite his involvement in an Apple deal, has been incredibly supportive throughout and I'm confident he would give his blessing regardless of his current commitments. The rest of the talented writers are equally enthusiastic about the prospect, making it absolutely thrilling to envision another captivating chapter.
Quentin Tarantino Should Direct The Final Raylan Givens Chapter
Tarantino, a renowned writer-director and massive fan of Leonard, played a pivotal role in making City Primeval a reality. It was during conversations with Olyphant on the set of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood that the idea of involving the actor in City Primeval took shape. Surprisingly, the original plan did not include the famous character Raylan Givens from Leonard's novel, but thanks to Tarantino's influence, Olyphant joined the project. Interestingly, Tarantino himself was initially set to direct an episode for the Justified revival, until personal circumstances compelled him to step aside.
Tarantino's involvement with City Primeval may have been limited, but Dinner confirms that he provided notes for the first few episodes and remained a supportive presence. If the audience response is positive enough to warrant a third season of Raylan Givens, it would be ideal to bring Tarantino fully into the creative process and have him direct some or all episodes.
It would be truly intriguing to witness a full season of Leonard-inspired television under Tarantino's direction. He is familiar with Leonard's work, having successfully adapted Rum Punch into Jackie Brown. If Tarantino still has the desire to work in television after completing his tenth film, The Movie Critic, a continuation of Justified: City Primeval to conclude Raylan Givens' story would be the perfect opportunity for him to explore that itch.
