Quentin Tarantino is currently in preproduction for his final film, The Movie Critic. The talented director, widely known for his hit films such as Pulp Fiction, Inglorious Basterds, and Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, has had the opportunity to work with some of the biggest names in Hollywood. The Movie Critic will tell the story of a film critic living in Los Angeles during the 1970s, but many details about the film remain a mystery.
In a recent interview with Deadline, Tarantino discussed the film and the type of actor he's looking for to play the lead role. Unfortunately, frequent collaborators Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio are too old for the part, so Tarantino will be working with someone new. Stay tuned for more updates on The Movie Critic.
"I haven't made a final decision yet, but I am looking for someone in their mid-30s to take on the leading role. It's important to me that it's a fresh face for the audience. I have someone in mind who I believe would excel in the role."
When questioned about the possibility of casting a British actor, the director firmly states his stance. Read his response below:
Yes, a British actor could certainly do the role justice, but I prefer not to cast one. We are currently in a peculiar time in cinema where British and Australian actors are constantly playing American roles, making it seem as though no one is acting in their own voice.
While we are fortunate to have many talented British actors who can convincingly play Americans, I am not trying to be xenophobic. It would be just as problematic if American actors went to Britain and attempted to play iconic British characters with poor accents, like Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins. It's simply not what audiences want to see.
Everything We Know About The Movie Critic
The Movie Critic is set to be Quentin Tarantino's tenth and final film, as he has long maintained that he will only make ten movies. Although many details about the project remain unknown, it is expected to be more similar to Once Upon A Time In Hollywood than his previous work. Despite initial rumors that the film would focus on renowned critic Pauline Kael, Tarantino has since clarified that it will instead center on a real but relatively unknown critic. The film takes place in 1977 Los Angeles and features a critic who writes reviews for a pornographic magazine called The Popstar Pages.
According to Tarantino, the unnamed critic who received the script was known for being extremely cynical and often used humor in an impolite manner in his reviews. With most of Tarantino's regular cast members unavailable, it remains to be seen who will be chosen to play the lead role in The Movie Critic. However, the director's decision to cast someone with whom he has never worked before may be a good fit for the film, which appears to be a departure from his previous works.
