Unveiling PUBG's Game-Changing Miramar Revamp: Retaining Original Charm with Meta-Breaking Twists!

PUBG's Miramar Revamp: Breaking the Meta While Honoring its Roots Discover how PUBG's production director implemented tighter areas, ziplines, and sandstorms to create dynamic gameplay and unlock endless combat possibilities

Highlights

The Miramar revamp in PUBG Update 25.1 aims to break the familiar meta and make the map more accessible, while still retaining its original concept and unique gameplay.

The Sandstorm significantly changes combat by impeding visibility, reducing mobility, and rendering electronic devices useless, thereby compelling players to think strategically.

Furthermore, the inclusion of Ziplines in Miramar not only enhances combat versatility but also allows for swift movement through expansive landscapes, ameliorating the difficulties posed by the map's rugged terrain and introducing an exhilarating element to engagements.

For PUBG players seeking a break from the usual urban battle royales, Miramar is the perfect choice for a unique and tactical experience. With its expansive landscapes, vibrant scenery, and preference for larger areas, Miramar attracts snipers and vehicle specialists who enjoy a more aggressive approach to gunplay in PUBG.

These defining characteristics remain prominent in the Miramar revamp in Update 25.1. The updated version of the map introduces new mechanics and tighter spaces, enhancing Miramar's hardcore appeal. In a recent interview with Game Rant, Taehyun Kim, the In-Game Production Director of the PUBG team, discussed how the combination of new mechanics and a map overhaul has evolved Miramar while maintaining its main attractions.

PUBG Wanted to Break the Meta with the Miramar Revamp

Kim believes that PUBG maps like Miramar remain appealing because players are familiar with them. However, this can also lead to boring gameplay as players become too comfortable with the map's optimal playstyle. When redesigning Miramar, our team did not simply aim for improved visuals in a familiar setting. Instead, our focus was on creating a map that maintains familiarity while also being more suitable for new strategies.

Our objective is to break away from the predictable meta and make Miramar more accessible to all players. The updated version of Miramar provides players with more opportunities to find loot early on in the game, a range of different paths for movement, and strategic choices that don't compromise the map's original concept and unique gameplay.

The Sandstorm is one of the exciting new features added to the Miramar revamp. Inspired by the Blizzard Zone in Vikendi, this natural phenomenon was specifically designed for Miramar's desert landscape. Similar to the Blizzard Zone, the Sandstorm creates vision impairment, hinders movement, and causes gradual damage. However, it takes PUBG gameplay to the next level by extinguishing Molotovs and Smoke Grenades, as well as disabling electronic equipment. This forces players to think strategically and consider alternative options such as using vehicles or taking different paths.

Zipline Adds Combat Flexibility

In classic Miramar, moving around the Sandstorm exposes players to the open terrain, making them vulnerable to snipers on ridges. However, the revamped location now offers Ziplines to help players move faster and with reduced chances of detection. To prevent abuse, the available weapons while on the Zipline are limited to SMGs and Handguns, and reloading is disabled during travel.

In Miramar, engagements at mid-to-long range occur frequently, making it difficult to quickly eliminate downed enemies due to the rugged terrain. Additionally, players without vehicles often get killed while moving to another location, especially if there are enemies on the opposite ridge. The Zipline feature not only adds an exciting dynamic to combat but also aims to address the challenges posed by Miramar's terrain.

Flexibility Leads To More Unique Experiences

: Miramar Revamp Offers Ground Travel Options

Players without immediate access to Ziplines need not worry, as the Miramar revamp introduces noticeable geographical changes to promote ground travel. One notable transformation is the southern locations of Miramar, which have been revamped into the abandoned yet loot-packed Resort that provides stunning views of the seas. In addition, Los Higos replaces new residential areas, and the festive Partona area brings a vibrant and colorful alternative to Miramar's usually desolate appearance.

Kim mentioned that the team analyzed PUBG gameplay data and found that players tended to avoid drop locations in remote areas with low looting efficiency. Additionally, the circle frequently appeared at the center of the original Miramar, leading to players landing in nearby towns. As a result, significant changes were made to the map layout of Miramar to enhance engagement, particularly when these gameplay patterns emerged.

Maps are crucial for players to experience different types of gameplay and encounter new changes in the game. However, it is difficult for the development team to create a specific location that guarantees the intended gameplay experience for players.

To address the issue of players approaching Miramar in a similar way, the development team has decided to encourage exploration of the map. In addition to visually appealing areas such as the Resort and Partona, the revamp of Miramar brings remote locations closer to the center and improves their loot efficiency. This small change challenges the previous focus on long-distance encounters in Miramar's wide landscapes, particularly now that players are more encouraged to drop into densely populated areas within the PUBG map.

The Miramar map revamp went live on August 2, 2023, alongside Update 25.1 of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds.
