BioWare is currently developing the next installment of the Mass Effect game series, referred to as Mass Effect 5. It is expected to continue the storyline from Mass Effect 3 and Mass Effect: Andromeda. With the release of Mass Effect: Legendary Edition and the abandonment of Anthem 2.0, BioWare's attention is now fully on Mass Effect 5 and Dragon Age Dreadwolf. Here is an overview of what is currently known about Mass Effect 5, although the details are limited.
Release date
BioWare is yet to provide a release date for Mass Effect 5. Considering that Dragon Age, which was first teased two years before the announcement of Mass Effect 5, holds more information, we can assume that BioWare will release Dreadwolf prior to Mass Effect. BioWare has mentioned that Dreadwolf is already fully playable. However, we will have to wait and see.
In February 2022, BioWare GM Gary McKay stated that Mass Effect 5 is currently in the prototyping phase. The developers are in the process of testing various "ideas and experiences" for the game, indicating that its release may still be far off. This notion was reiterated in April 2022, when BioWare released a blog post confirming that Mass Effect 5 is still in the early stages of development. During the recent N7 Day on November 7, BioWare unveiled new concept art for Mass Effect 5 and reassured fans that the game is still in pre-production, which is progressing positively.
What we know
Our understanding of Mass Effect 5 is limited, primarily derived from the game's initial trailer. Within the trailer, we catch a glimpse of two distinct galaxies, hinting at the possibility that Mass Effect 5 could serve as a continuation of both Mass Effect 3 and Mass Effect: Andromeda, weaving a narrative that traverses these separate celestial realms.
The game appears to be a true sequel to Mass Effect 3, evident by the presence of deceased Reapers and an older Liara T'Soni in the trailer. In Mass Effect 3, Liara is 109 years old, and her species, the asari, have the potential to live for nearly 1000 years. This suggests that Mass Effect 5 may take place as far as 900 years after the events of the original trilogy.
Brenon Holmes, a BioWare producer, has confirmed that Mass Effect 5 will also make use of Unreal Engine. This information was obtained through a job posting seeking programmers with experience using both Unreal Engine 4 and Unreal Engine 5. These programmers will play a crucial role in the development of the new Mass Effect game.
Platforms
It remains unknown which platforms the new Mass Effect will be available on. However, it is expected that the game will be released for the current generation of consoles, such as Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, along with a PC version. It is unlikely that it will be available for the Nintendo Switch or older consoles like Xbox One and PS4, but no official confirmation has been provided yet.
PC system specs
There is currently no official confirmation about which hardware will support this game, including PC. The minimum and recommended PC specs for Mass Effect have not been revealed yet, and it is uncertain if the game will even be available on PC. Although it is highly probable (around 99%), we can only be certain once BioWare or EA makes an official announcement.

Multiplayer details
It remains unknown whether BioWare's upcoming Mass Effect installment will incorporate multiplayer features. However, fans hope that multiplayer will be present, drawing inspiration from the enjoyable online Horde mode multiplayer found in Mass Effect 3 and Mass Effect: Andromeda, which emphasized teamwork and strategy.
DLC/Microtransaction details
There is currently no information available from BioWare or publisher EA regarding the inclusion of DLC or microtransactions in the new Mass Effect game. Previous titles in the series, such as Mass Effect 3 and Mass Effect: Andromeda, included microtransactions within their multiplayer modes. Additionally, the original trilogy featured paid DLC expansions that introduced new squadmates, story-driven side quests, and additional weapons and armor. Notably, Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3 set the standard for post-launch DLCs in RPGs with their Lair of the Shadow Broker and Citadel expansions. If BioWare manages to deliver a similar level of storytelling, we would gladly pay for DLC in Mass Effect 5.

As a Gen Z fan, I am incredibly excited about the upcoming release of Mass Effect 5. The Mass Effect series has always been one of my favorites, and I can't wait to see what BioWare has in store for us this time around.
The trailer that was released at the Game Awards 2020 was incredibly promising, and it gave us a glimpse of what we can expect from the game. The visuals look stunning, and the story seems like it will be just as epic as the previous games in the series. I'm particularly interested in seeing how BioWare will continue the story after the events of Mass Effect 3, and I'm hoping that they will be able to give us a satisfying conclusion to the story.
I'm also excited to see what new features and gameplay mechanics will be introduced in Mass Effect 5. The series has always been known for its innovative gameplay, and I'm sure that BioWare will continue to push the boundaries with this new installment. I'm particularly hoping for a more streamlined and user-friendly interface, as well as more opportunities for exploration and character development.
