The day one Xbox Game Pass title Ravenlok, which was released in May, has already achieved a significant milestone. Despite initially being overshadowed by Xbox's poorly received vampire-slaying FPS Redfall, which launched just two days earlier, Ravenlok has emerged as one of the standout Game Pass success stories of the year.
Ravenlok, developed by Cococucumber as part of its Voxel Trilogy, is a captivating third-person action RPG set in a charming fantasy world that draws inspiration from Alice in Wonderland. The game showcases a beautiful voxel art style, which Cococucumber has been perfecting since the release of Riverbond in 2019. Echo Generation, the final installment of the Voxel Trilogy, is a turn-based RPG that draws inspiration from the popular series Stranger Things. Ravenlok marks the culmination of Cococucumber's journey with their signature voxel art style.
Ravenlok, Cococucumber's first-ever fantasy action RPG and their largest game to date, has reached a significant milestone. In an interview with Martin Gauvreau, the Lead Programmer and Director at Cococucumber, it was revealed that Ravenlok has gained an impressive 500,000 players in just six weeks. This achievement is particularly notable for a smaller indie title like Ravenlok.
Gauvreau further discusses in the interview how developing for Xbox Series X and S proved beneficial for Cococucumber. They were able to optimize the game for 4K resolution at 60 frames-per-second on Series X, thanks to the capabilities of the console. Gauvreau also highlights how the console's SSD allowed the team to stay true to their vision and minimize compromises. Notably, Ravenlok launched shortly after Redfall, and it is possible that Game Pass users who were disappointed by Arkane's vampire shooter may have switched over to Cococucumber's fantasy RPG, as it was the next Game Pass release.
Despite being a smaller studio, Cococucumber's games are progressively growing in scale with each release. Following the remarkable success of Ravenlok on Game Pass, the concluding installment of the studio's Voxel Trilogy, one might question if Cococucumber intends to continue creating voxel games. With Ravenlok attracting an impressive half a million players, there is undoubtedly a substantial influx of new fans and followers eagerly anticipating news of Cococucumber's upcoming project.
Currently, Ravenlok can be enjoyed on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S platforms.
