Layers of Fear (2023) returns with its signature minimalistic gameplay and immerses players in a hauntingly beautiful world crafted with the Unreal Engine 5. The game's freeform exploration may leave players feeling lost at times, but it only adds to the unnerving tension that permeates throughout the experience. The latest installment of Layers of Fear (2023) weaves a new story around the enigmatic Writer's Story, revealing the hidden connections between the previous entries in the franchise. The game begins with the Writer's journey to a desolate lighthouse, which serves as the backdrop for the player's exploration. The opening sequence sets the tone for the ominous atmosphere that players will navigate, while also introducing them to the game's controls and mechanics. As players explore the Writer's bedroom, they will discover a lighter adorned with intricate bird engravings and a mysterious picture frame lying face down.
Upon exiting the room, players are presented with two options: head left to explore the dimly-lit and eerie basement or turn right to continue exploring the remaining rooms on the main floor. As players progress through the game, they will come across a multitude of narrative letters that offer insight into the backstory of the Writer and how they came to be at the lighthouse. These letters reveal that the Writer won a contest hosted by a publishing company, and also include newspaper excerpts and letters written by the Writer's son.
Ring, Ring...
As you explore more of the main floor, the phone in the hallway will suddenly start ringing. Answering it will reveal a conversation between The Writer and her management company, urging her to start working as soon as possible. Once you return to the bedroom and interact with the typewriter, The Writer will sit down and begin typing. However, just as she starts, an ominous echo reverberates throughout the lighthouse. This prompts you to investigate the source of the noise, leading you back to the main hallway. There, you'll find that the door across from the phone is now unlocked and slightly open, revealing a storage room with a painting covered in an old sheet.
After viewing the painting of the muse, players will be guided back to the hallway where the Writer suggests using the phone. Upon interacting with the phone, the Writer contacts her son to discuss the management's call, mentioning the awe-inspiring nature of the lighthouse. Following the call, players can return to the bedroom and continue writing without any interruptions. As the next chapter, The Painter's Story, begins, the screen fades to black. Layers of Fear (2023) is currently available on PC, Playstation 4 and 5, and Xbox One and Series S|X.
