Originally a small password manager component in Chrome, Google's password manager has now expanded in order to compete with 1Password and Bitwarden. While it may not offer as many features as some competitors, it still gets the job done. If you're part of the Google ecosystem, it's worth giving it a try. Now, Google is enhancing its password manager on the Google app for iPhone and iPad, allowing you to utilize your stored passwords across various platforms.
The Google app on iOS now supports auto-filling passwords. If you have passwords saved on Google, you can conveniently auto-fill them in your favorite apps, including Safari. By setting Google as the auto-fill provider on your phone, your passwords will automatically appear in the suggestions row on your keyboard, like any other autofill provider. Face ID or Touch ID will be required for authentication. To enable this feature, open the Settings app, go to Passwords > Password Options, and select Google. Once set up, your phone will access passwords from Google and prompt autofill when necessary.
If you've seen this before, it's because Chrome already functions as an autofill provider. Now, you have two options to autofill passwords from your Google account on an iPhone or iPad. This change primarily benefits individuals who have the Google app installed but not Chrome, transforming the Google app into a comprehensive tool for iPhone and iPad users. The same app can already perform web searches, handle two-factor authentication, and conduct photo searches with Google Lens. Additionally, it serves as a platform to access the Google Discover article feed, alongside the new tab page in Chrome.
To explore this feature, ensure that your Google app is updated on your iPhone, and then navigate to Settings to confirm if the app is available as an autofill provider. If it is, go ahead and use autofill.
