The Naruto franchise is undoubtedly one of the most popular and successful anime of all time, with a widespread fan base and impressive revenue earnings. Created by manga author Masashi Kishimoto, it is widely regarded as a pioneer of the anime industry, introducing Japanese animation storytelling to a global audience. Alongside Bleach and One Piece, Naruto is part of The Big Three - a trio of long-running and widely adored anime franchises.
One of the key factors behind the Naruto franchise's immense popularity is its unique concept, captivating storyline, and diverse cast of characters. Its power system, based on the concept of chakra and jutsu, is also a standout feature, perfectly suited to the tale of ninjas and shinobis. Throughout the franchise, there are numerous power-ups that enhance the characters' abilities, including the formidable Sage Mode. This state significantly boosts a shinobi's power and unlocks a range of new techniques, but mastering it requires immense chakra levels and training at the sage institutions where it originated.
Mount Myōboku
The Shinobi world boasts just two locations where one can learn the coveted Sage Mode, and Mount Myōboku is one of them. This mystical locale, also known as the Mountain of Bewilderment and the Land of Toads, is one of the Naruto franchise's three uncharted sage regions and is home to the toads summoned by Jiraiya, Minato, and Naruto. An enchanting land teeming with distinctive flora, Mount Myōboku is governed by the likes of Gamamaru, the Great Toad Sage, and Shima and Fukasaku, while Gamabunta reigns as the site's chief toad. To access this remote destination, one must either embark on a month-long journey along secret trails from Konohagakure or possess a summoning contract with one of the toads from Mount Myōboku and allow for a reverse summoning. Here, Shima and Fukasaku teach Shinobi how to meld natural energy with their chakra in order to create the Senjutsu chakra, which grants access to the Sage Mode.
To master the Sage Mode, it is crucial to achieve a harmonious balance between natural and spiritual energies. Any disparity or disproportion between the two can result in failure. To aid in learning the technique, the toads have developed innovative methods, such as using a special oil that facilitates the absorption of natural energy. However, if the practitioner is unable to maintain equilibrium and over-absorbs the energy, the consequences could be dire, resulting in permanent petrification.
Ryūchi Cave
The Shinobi world boasts another renowned location where the Sage Mode is taught - the Ryūchi Cave. As one of the three sage regions, this legendary place is inhabited by snakes and overseen by the esteemed White Snake Sage, an expert in Senjutsu. Her vast knowledge can be passed down to those seeking to master the Sage Mode, such as Orochimaru and Kabuto, both of whom trained here. However, only Kabuto succeeded due to the pre-requisite of having a powerful body - something Orochimaru lacked.
Only the bravest and most desperate seekers of power venture to Ryūchi Cave, which lies just a few days' journey from Konohagakure. To gain an audience with the revered White Snake Sage, one must first pass three treacherous trials set by the snakes themselves. Failure means certain doom, as the snakes are permitted to consume the candidate's chakra. But if one survives and is infused with natural energy by the Sage, they are granted the coveted Sage Mode. However, if their body cannot withstand the energy, the White Snake Sage will devour them without hesitation.
Shikkotsu Forest
Shikkotsu Forest, also known as the Dry Bone Forest, is home to the slug Katsuyu and is one of the three unexplored sage regions. Its slugs possess the ability to easily use Senjutsu. While former Hokage Tsunade knew how to use the Slug Sage Mode, it is unclear whether she was taught by the Great Slug Sage or her grandfather, the first Hokage Hashirama Senju. Interestingly, Shikkotsu Forest was first discovered by Kamui Uchiha, one of the founders of Konohagakure, during his journey of self-discovery.
The origins of Hashirama Senju's powerful Sage Mode remain a mystery to fans of the series. While he is widely regarded as an expert in this area, it is unclear how he learned and mastered this unique skill. Some speculate that his gifted ability to absorb natural energy, combined with his close association with the Shikkotsu forest, played a key role in his development. Perhaps future episodes of the Boruto series, which serves as both a spin-off and sequel to Naruto, will shed more light on this intriguing topic.
