Gaining the Mangekyo Sharingan is a remarkable achievement that sets a shinobi apart from their Uchiha peers. Throughout history, the select few who have awakened it have become legendary figures in both Konohagakure and the shinobi world. In addition to the standard abilities of the three-tomoe Sharingan, the Mangekyo Sharingan also grants unique powers that vary between individuals, as seen in the different pinwheel-style tomoe that define its appearance.
Among the varied Mangekyo Sharingan abilities possessed by characters in Naruto, few are as overwhelmingly powerful as Obito Uchiha's Kamui. Kamui was a signature of Obito's fighting style, which relied on the intangibility and teleportation powers he was able to employ with his Mangekyo Sharingan. Portrayed as a form of space-time ninjutsu rooted in a specific dimensional plane, it allowed Obito to defeat some of Root's most skilled shinobi and a large part of the Uchiha clan during the night of the massacre.
Even taking on extremely powerful shinobi in Naruto was not a stretch for Obito, who became a major threat to the Five Great Shinobi Countries on reaching adulthood and mastering his use of Kamui. The right half of his body, which was cultured from Hashirama Senju's cells, is theorized to be the reason behind his capacity to repeatedly use Kamui at all times, with no loss of vision, in sharp contrast to Kakashi who struggled to handle the huge chakra drain it imposed on him.
When examining Obito's earlier development prior to awakening the Mangekyo Sharingan, there is a stark difference in ability when Kamui comes into the picture. Considering the feats Obito has performed during his lifetime, it is worth inquiring into the excessive power up this ability granted him and how it affected the power scaling throughout the series.
The Power Of Intangibility
Obito possessed only one eye that granted him the Kamui ability for most of the series since he gave his other eye to Kakashi. His Kamui enabled him to transport individuals or objects at short range into another dimension. Although he was usually shown to be in physical contact with the target, it was not a consistent condition, which suggests that it was not entirely necessary. Upon activating the technique, a spiraling void emerged from Obito's eye and slowly warped the appearance of his target until it was entirely sucked into the dimension. Once inside Kamui's dimension, objects or people were untraceable and could not be sensed from the outside world. Some believe that Kamui was superior to Minato's Flying Thunder God, but the combat applications of both techniques diverged significantly.
Obito used Kamui more often than not to transport himself between dimensions, either to move instantly over long distances or to evade attacks he could not defend against. This ability became circular when he applied it to grant himself intangibility, causing specific body parts to be automatically transported to Kamui's dimension. Everything that Obito was in contact with, including clothes, weapons, and opponents, passed through him seamlessly, giving off the impression of intangibility. Kamui's most pertinent offensive ability was that it allowed Obito to sneak underground and surprise opponents. He used this technique to escape Minato's Flying Thunder God, Konan's Paper Shuriken, attacks by Fu and Torune of Konohagakure's Root, as well as the Five Kage. The ability gave Obito an unfair advantage as it allowed him to sidestep all jutsu thrown at him effortlessly. This played into his persona as Tobi, where he would pretend to be incompetent and weak but still emerge unharmed from any attacks thrown at him.
Instantaneous Teleportation
Alternatively, during Naruto, Obito's left eye was in Kakashi's possession and allowed him to perform a long-range version of the technique. However, his proficiency was limited due to his chakra reserves and not being from the Uchiha clan. Kakashi could create a spiraling portal that would drag anything within its range into Kamui's dimension. He first used this ability during the Kazekage Rescue Mission to transport Deidara's arm into Kamui's dimension. Initially struggling with maintaining accuracy, Kakashi was visibly drained after using it in quick succession. Over time, he evolved to a point where he could teleport away from rapidly moving nails launched by Pain.
Combined with the right eye, these two ocular powers are some of the most versatile techniques in the Naruto universe. Obito became one of the strongest shinobi of his generation relying on them alone, rarely using other jutsu in his arsenal. Kamui could deal with short or wide-ranging attacks and aid in taking on swarms of opponents without taking any damage. Obito could drag out fights long enough to ascertain an enemy's weaknesses and strike decisively before they could comprehend the true nature of his visual prowess. This is likely one of Kamui's greatest benefits, far outweighing its few weaknesses and drawbacks in the hands of an able and astute user like Obito.
The Only Point Of Weakness
