Loki season 2 is almost here, marking the next chapter in the story of the infamous God of Mischief. Despite Loki's demise in Avengers: Infinity War, his tale has persisted through the use of time travel by the Avengers in Endgame. Now enlisted by the Time Variance Authority, Loki plays a crucial role in Marvel's exploration of the multiverse.
Since his debut in Thor in 2011, Loki has appeared in various films and shows, evolving from a prominent villain to a somewhat heroic character. This establishes a rich 12-year history for Loki within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In preparation for Loki season 2, here are the key details to know about the mischievous deity.
11 Loki Is The Adopted Brother Of Thor
10 Loki Had An Alliance With Thanos
Loki made his first appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as Thor's adopted brother, with ambitions to take over the throne of Asgard. Despite experiencing defeat initially at the hands of Thor and later at the hands of the Avengers, when he endeavored to rule over Earth, the God of Mischief has gradually undergone a process of redemption. Eventually, he truly became Thor's brother and an ally following the destruction of Asgard in Thor: Ragnarok. Regrettably, their newfound alliance was short-lived.
After being defeated and presumed dead in the first Thor film, Loki reemerged in collaboration with Thanos, the Mad Titan. He led the Chitauri forces in their quest to conquer Earth, while also vowing to retrieve the Space Stone (also known as the Tesseract) for Thanos. However, Loki's plans were thwarted by the combined efforts of the Avengers, leading to his imprisonment in Asgard. As a result, Thanos was left without both the Space Stone and the Mind Stone, which he had given to Loki as assistance for his invasion.
9 Loki Was Ultimately Killed By Thanos
8 The Avengers Created A New Timeline Where 2012 Loki Escapes
Despite Loki and Thor reconciling as brothers post Thor: Ragnarok, their newfound harmony was short-lived due to Thanos' arrival in Avengers: Infinity War, seeking the Tesseract. Previously known for his deception in the MCU, Loki's attempt to pretend loyalty to Thanos before betraying him ended in failure, resulting in the Mad Titan killing Loki and claiming the Space Stone. Throughout this brutal encounter, Thor could do nothing but bear witness to the tragedy.
Despite Loki's demise, his story continued to unfold thanks to the ingenious plan formulated by the Avengers in Avengers: Endgame. Tasked with retrieving the Infinity Stones from the past in order to reverse Thanos' devastating Decimation, they inadvertently allowed the Space Stone from 2012 to fall into the crafty hands of Loki. Instead of being confined to Asgard as intended, Loki cunningly evaded capture, giving rise to a divergent Loki variant whose transformative journey promises remarkable redemption.
7 The TVA Recruits 2012 Loki To Capture Another Loki
6 Loki Joins With Sylvie To Uncover The Secrets Of The TVA
As a result, Loki's escape from Thor and the Avengers in 2012 ultimately led him into the grasp of the Time Variance Authority during the events of Loki season 1. Surprisingly, instead of being erased, Loki was offered a unique opportunity by Agent Mobius M. Mobius. The mission entailed capturing another elusive variant of Loki, who had skillfully evaded the TVA's detection for an extensive period of time. Witnessing the alternate life that he could have had, as dictated by the Sacred Timeline, Loki decided to collaborate with the TVA in order to shape his own future.
After tracking down the rebellious Loki variant named Sylvie, the two mischievous deities teamed up to unveil the mysteries behind the TVA and its alleged Time-Keepers, who were the founders of the organization. Despite initially struggling with trust, these two variants gradually formed a connection. However, this newfound bond raised a significant concern for the TVA since it was deemed a major disruption in the sacred timeline. Being variants of the same individual, their interaction and attraction to one another were considered unexpected and out of place.
5 Loki and Sylvie Defeat Alioth
4 Sylvie Kills He Who Remains (And Unleashes Kang)
After realizing that the Time-Keepers were merely robotic figureheads, Sylvie and Loki found themselves pruned from the Sacred Timeline. This led them to the Void, a realm outside of time and space. Together, they harnessed their powers to confront Alioth, the guardian of the Void, a trans-temporal being. By defeating Alioth, the Loki variants gained entry to the Citadel at the End of Time, the dwelling of the true mastermind behind the TVA, He Who Remains.
He Who Remains revealed that the Sacred Timeline was originally established to prevent the emergence of his own alternative versions in parallel realities. Known as Nathaniel Richards, many of these alternate versions manifest as Kang the Conqueror, an infamous time-traveling tyrant in the Marvel universe. In order to avert a catastrophic multiversal war initiated by his variants in the past, He Who Remains harnessed the power of Alioth and established the TVA to safeguard a "Sacred Timeline" devoid of his alternate selves. However, Sylvie's decision to eliminate He Who Remains ultimately led to the release of these variant Kangs, who now roam freely across the multiverse.
3 The Council Of Kangs Has Assembled
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania reveals the aftermath of Sylvie's actions during the post-credits scenes. In addition to Scott Lang's Ant-Man and his family confronting an exiled Kang the Conqueror in the Quantum Realm, the post-credits scene showcases a trio of prominent Kang variants from the comics: Rama-Tut, Immortus, and the Centurion. Moreover, an expansive arena is depicted, with numerous iterations of Kang converging as the iconic Council of Kangs from the comics, who seemingly harbor ambitions of dominating the multiverse for themselves.
2 Loki Is Facing A New Reality (And A New Time-Traveling Crisis)
Loki season 2 is set to continue the story from the first season, where Sylvie has vanished and Loki has returned to the TVA. However, things have changed as reality has been rewritten. Now, a variant of Kang has taken direct control of the TVA, revealing himself instead of hiding behind the Time-Keepers' facade. In addition, trailers for Loki season 2 showcase the God of Mischief struggling with a condition known as "time-slipping," where his body is transported to different time periods without warning. Furthermore, Agent Mobius and Hunter B-52 seem to have no recollection of him.
1 Loki Will Face A New Kang Variant: Victor Timely
Victor Timely, a classic variant of Kang from the comics, is set to have a significant role in the upcoming season of Loki. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and trailers for Loki season 2 have confirmed his appearance and highlighted his time-travel inventions showcased in 1901. However, his true intentions and allegiance to the Council of Kangs remain uncertain. Nevertheless, it appears that Timely might collaborate with Loki and Agent Mobius to some extent, although it could be driven by his personal agenda in Loki season 2.
