Highlights
Dragon Ball Super introduces a new transformation called Super Saiyan Blue, which represents a rebirth of the original Super Saiyan forms.
By attaining the status of a Super Saiyan God and harnessing divine ki, one can attain the transformation known as Super Saiyan Blue. This form is distinguished by a striking blue aura and cyan-colored hair.
Once this state has been fully grasped, Super Saiyan Blue grants a formidable surge in strength, improved control over ki, and the capacity to accumulate power boosts similar to the Kaio-ken technique.
In Dragon Ball Super, the latest addition to Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z universe, the characters Goku and Vegeta have achieved new levels of power. This surpasses the traditional Super Saiyan transformations seen in the original series, thanks to the introduction of godly ki and its accompanying forms. With the help of a radical new form called Super Saiyan Blue, Goku and Vegeta have now become as powerful as the gods themselves. Super Saiyan Blue first appeared in the film Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F, and it represents a revival of the Super Saiyan transformations from the manga and anime. It builds upon the Super Saiyan God form introduced in Dragon Ball Z: Battle of the Gods. Some games and merchandise related to the series also refer to this form as "Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan," providing additional clues about its true nature. Since its introduction, Super Saiyan Blue has become one of the most prominently featured transformations in Dragon Ball Super, as Goku and Vegeta undergo training with the powerful Beerus, the God of Destruction, and the enigmatic Whis, the Angel.
What Is Super Saiyan Blue?
Super Saiyan Blue is a divine version of the regular Super Saiyan form. To attain this level, a Saiyan must possess godly ki and already be a Super Saiyan God. When a Saiyan with these qualifications raises their energy to a sufficient level, they can transform into Super Saiyan Blue. In terms of appearance, the form is similar to the standard Super Saiyan transformation, except that the aura is a fiery electric blue instead of golden. The aura also contains sparkling particles that travel upwards and occasional bursts of electricity. The Saiyan's hair turns cyan or light blue instead of gold, but maintains the same shape as in their normal Super Saiyan form. Additionally, their irises also turn blue along with their hair color.
Akira Toriyama explains that the blue aura symbolizes strength and tranquility, distinguishing it from the rage-filled states of previous Super Saiyan forms. This aligns with the divine nature of the transformation. Super Saiyan Blue also showcases a slightly more defined musculature compared to the Super Saiyan God form, emphasizing the increase in power. During the transformation, the Saiyan is initially encased in a white energy shell, which then transforms into blue ki and bursts to reveal the transformed user surrounded by the characteristic blue aura.
Techniques And Abilities
Unlike the standard Super Saiyan form and Super Saiyan 2, this form did not debut during a battle as a transformation. It was revealed by Goku while facing Golden Frieza in Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F. Goku and Vegeta both attained Super Saiyan Blue after training under Beerus and Whis on Beerus' planet. This happened after the events of Dragon Ball Z: Battle of the Gods, when Goku tapped into the power of godly ki as a Super Saiyan God. This showdown served as a pivotal moment for the prominence of godly ki in the series, which lies at the core of Super Saiyan Blue.
Goku himself has stated that this is the initial stage of transformation for a Saiyan who possesses the power of a Super Saiyan God. It allows the Saiyan to elevate their power to that of a Super Saiyan while utilizing divine energy. Once mastered, this form requires a state of mental calmness, resulting in a significantly lower depletion of energy compared to the energy-intensive Super Saiyan 3 form, which expels energy excessively. In the case of a Saiyan who already possesses divine status, they will achieve a variation of this transformation called Super Saiyan Rosé, as demonstrated by Goku Black.
Those who cannot sense divine ki will not comprehend the power level of Super Saiyan Blue, as it does not utilize regular ki. Mastery of this form requires extensive training and its full potential can only be unlocked over time. Initially, activating it will deplete a considerable amount of ki, similar to Super Saiyan 3, but this drain lessens with experience. Compared to other Super Saiyan forms, Super Saiyan Blue provides a significant increase in raw power. Goku and Vegeta primarily employ their regular Super Saiyan forms to gauge an opponent's strength, only utilizing Super Saiyan Blue when they intend to go all out against formidable adversaries or conclude a battle swiftly.
Once mastered, Super Saiyan Blue allows for enhanced ki control, enabling prolonged usage in extended battles. Additionally, users can conserve energy while in this form, solely focusing it on ki-based attacks, unlike Super Saiyan 2 and 3 forms that constantly leak ki. Moreover, Goku's improved ki control allows for the combination of other power-ups with Super Saiyan Blue, such as the Kaio-ken. In his encounters with Hit and Jiren, Goku achieved the X10 and X20 levels of Kaio-ken, respectively, while utilizing Super Saiyan Blue.
Harnessed To Its Full Potential
Saiyans must undergo extensive training to master the Super Saiyan Blue form after achieving it. Initially, their power level is at its peak when they first transform, but it gradually decreases to normal levels. While Super Saiyan Blue does consume a significant amount of energy, there are techniques to overcome its drawbacks. Vegeta discovered a method of switching between Super Saiyan God and Super Saiyan Blue to conserve energy, enabling him to unleash the full power of Super Saiyan Blue at the perfect moment. This allowed him to overpower Super Saiyan Rosé Goku Black in the Future Trunks Saga.
Later in the manga, Goku revealed an improved version of this form, which maintains the full power of Super Saiyan Blue consistently. Once both Goku and Vegeta mastered this form, they only transformed into the standard Super Saiyan Blue form as a step towards reaching its perfected state. In this state, the user's aura vanishes as all their godly ki is contained within, requiring immense calmness and mental focus to execute.
This form is unique to the Dragon Ball Super manga, as the anime maintained the power levels of Super Saiyan Blue at their normal levels. The base form of Super Saiyan Blue can be strengthened in various ways, usually through intense rage. This is in line with the tradition of previous Super Saiyan transformations, which also rely on anger to increase power levels, reflecting the characteristics of the Saiyan race. With this enhancement, Goku and Vegeta were able to compete with and occasionally overpower Golden Frieza, Super Saiyan Rosé Goku Black, Fused Zamasu, Hit, and Jiren. However, it should be noted that Jiren was still not fighting at full power against this form.
