Unlike the original Spider-Man comics, it has been confirmed that Eddie Brock will not reprise his familiar role as the Lethal Protector. The trailers provide hints about several potential options, indicating that Venom could be someone from the existing cast. However, due to the multiple plausible paths, it remains uncertain which direction Marvel's Spider-Man 2 will ultimately take.
Venom Is Playable
The first speculation many fans have is that Venom will play a significant role and potentially be accessible as a playable character in specific parts of the game. As Peter is bound to wear the black suit for only a portion of Spider-Man 2, the combat style centered around Venom's tentacles may not be fully utilized without him inheriting it. It is worth noting, however, that these combat abilities appear intentionally overpowering, suggesting that a playable Venom might also have certain limitations. Nevertheless, this does not address the question of Venom's identity and its implications for the storyline.
Venom Is Harry Osborn
It is strongly implied in trailers and the ending of Marvel's Spider-Man 1 that Harry Osborn is the main host of Venom. In an attempt to cure him of a deadly illness, Harry comes into contact with the Venom symbiote. It is possible that he either passes it on to Peter or gives him a sample while they spend time together. However, it is unclear how the symbiote with spider-like abilities returns to Harry, and it remains a mystery as to why Harry would oppose Spider-Man even under the influence of the symbiote. One possibility is that Harry's father, Norman Osborn, may use the symbiote himself. However, this would diminish the impact of a beloved character turning evil. The heavy insinuation that Harry is Venom without confirmation could be a deliberate misdirection, but the implications for the symbiote are still unknown.
Venom Is Peter Parker
If Harry Osborn isn't Venom, then Spider-Man himself becomes the next prime suspect. While Peter, Miles, and Venom have consistently been portrayed as distinct individuals, it is worth noting that Peter has had possession of the black suit for an undisclosed period of time. Throughout Spider-Man's history, there have been instances where Peter assumes Venom's monstrous appearance, typically when the symbiote exerts direct control. However, fully embracing this possibility could clash with the conventional storyline of Peter triumphing over his inner darkness and parting ways with the black suit. Thus, it is more plausible that someone else is responsible.
Miles Helps Peter Deal With Venom
Nevertheless, assuming that Venom truly is Harry, Peter will have to spend some time donning the symbiote. He might even assume a temporary role as the antagonist in order to improve his civilian life, which would then require Miles to intervene. Instead of the conventional church bells that Peter typically employs to repel the symbiote suit, Miles' electric Venom powers could effectively electrocute it off Peter once he reaches his breaking point. Consequently, this would give Venom, or at the very least the symbiote, a reason to hold animosity towards both Spider-Men, as well as an opportunity to validate its name by emulating not only Peter's powers but also Miles'. Having a Venom that mirrors the abilities of all the existing Spider-Men would be a compelling addition to Marvel's Spider-Man 2, regardless of the true identity behind the mask.
