Highlights
Modern Warfare 3's Zombies mode is revolutionizing the gaming experience with its innovative open-world concept. This exciting new approach presents thrilling opportunities for players to delve into uncharted territory, including the introduction of exhilarating boss battles that have never been witnessed before.
In previous iterations of the Call of Duty franchise, the Zombies bosses faced backlash for being more of a nuisance rather than an enjoyable challenge, largely because of the cramped and limited map designs. However, the forthcoming Zombies mode in Modern Warfare 3 has the potential to revolutionize boss battles by offering expansive open-world maps and the capacity to host up to 24 players in a single lobby.
Call of Duty Zombies has a rich history, starting as a hidden mode in Call of Duty: World at War. It quickly became a standout feature of the game and laid the groundwork for something unique. Now, Call of Duty Zombies is a beloved part of the franchise, and it is set to make its first appearance in Modern Warfare, with the upcoming release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.
As the first of its kind, Modern Warfare 3's Zombies mode has a lot to prove. Instead of following the traditional round-based formula, it has opted for a complete change in direction. In an open-world setting, this version of the beloved mode may not appeal to every fan, but it does provide an opportunity for the developers to explore new elements, such as proper boss battles, that Zombies has never incorporated before.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3's Zombies Mode Could Have Some Impressive Boss Fights
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is perhaps the first game in the series to successfully incorporate bosses into its Zombies mode. While Hellhounds, the iconic enemies introduced in World at War's Shi No Numa map, can be considered the first true "bosses," they were relatively easy to defeat. However, Treyarch took inspiration from the Hellhounds and expanded upon the concept. Although there have been a few well-designed Zombies bosses in the series, the majority of them suffer from the same weaknesses.
The main issue with most Call of Duty Zombies bosses lies in the maps they inhabit. While some Treyarch Zombies maps can become quite expansive as players unlock various areas, they are never considered overly large. The intention behind most maps is to corner the player and overwhelm them with enemies. As a result, most Zombies bosses end up being more of a nuisance than an exciting challenge. The bosses that are more fondly remembered are often found in larger maps like Origins or Call of the Dead.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Zombies has the potential to truly stand out in this aspect. Although fans are not yet aware of all the specific details, it has been confirmed that the Zombies mode in this game will be set in a large, open-world environment. Furthermore, each lobby will accommodate an impressive total of 24 players. While some longtime Zombies fans might have concerns about this player count, it actually sets the stage for captivating boss battles. The latest trailer for Modern Warfare 3 hints at the inclusion of these thrilling encounters. Towards the end of the trailer, viewers catch a glimpse of an enormous monster wreaking havoc on a sprawling battlefield. This creature appears to be even larger than the formidable Forsaken and might even surpass the size of the Ordas. If this preview is any indication, players can anticipate intense raid-style bosses that necessitate coordination and collaboration among all 24 players in the lobby. While these bosses could potentially become tiresome bullet sponges, particularly if other players ignore them, Modern Warfare 3 offers the opportunity to truly innovate, thanks to its expansive open-world map.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 launches on November 10 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
