Reviving Classic Spec Ops in Modern Warfare 3

Reviving Classic Spec Ops in Modern Warfare 3

Modern Warfare 3 must return to its roots and revive the beloved classic Spec Ops mode, as the recent attempts to innovate have failed to capture the essence of what made it so popular

In the past 15 years, the Call of Duty franchise has featured a third game mode in addition to campaign and multiplayer. This extra mode has taken many forms, from Black Ops 4's impressive Blackout battle royale to the less popular Extinction mode in Call of Duty: Ghosts. However, one of the most beloved modes in Call of Duty history is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare's Spec Ops mode. Serving as Infinity Ward's response to Treyarch's Zombies, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2's Spec Ops mode offered players a variety of short challenges that utilized the campaign's biggest set pieces and created entirely new missions around them. With certain missions featuring co-op gameplay, Spec Ops quickly became a fan favorite, and fans are eager to see a return to this classic mode.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Should Bring Back The Classic Version of Spec Ops

Reviving Classic Spec Ops in Modern Warfare 3

Modern Warfare's Spec Ops mode was a highly anticipated feature of the 2019 reboot, offering a nostalgic nod to the original series. However, the execution of the mode left something to be desired. Taking place after the game's campaign, the mode was split into several sub-modes, including Survival, Operations, and Missions. While Operations offered a more expansive experience, allowing players to infiltrate an enemy base and extract or destroy an item, Missions provided a more streamlined option. Despite the variety of modes, the objectives of each boiled down to the same formula of infiltrating a base, eliminating enemies, and leaving. While the mode technically had a lot of content, it lacked true diversity and left fans wanting more.

Call of Duty fans have been eagerly anticipating the return of the original Spec Ops mode, and while Infinity Ward's attempts with Modern Warfare 2 were commendable, they still fell short of expectations. The mode featured only three missions at launch, which were meaty but lacked the excitement of the original formula. Modern Warfare 2's Spec Ops mode did see some improvements by expanding on 2019's Operations and introducing different class builds known as "Kits" that offered unique skillsets for players, but it still wasn't quite what fans were hoping for. For the next installment in the series, it's time for Infinity Ward to bring back the original Spec Ops mode and deliver the thrilling experience that fans have been waiting for. While new experiences are always welcome, there's simply no beating the classic formula that made Spec Ops so beloved in the first place.

The upcoming Modern Warfare game would benefit from featuring a selection of short, exhilarating missions that expand on the most exciting set pieces from the campaign. In addition, there is ample inspiration for a traditional Spec Ops mode in both Modern Warfare 2019 and Modern Warfare 2, including standout moments such as the estate stealth mission and the highway chase. Modern Warfare 2 is currently available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
