Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has exceeded fans’ expectations with its incredible gameplay reveal by Insomniac Games. The Symbiote abilities of Peter, as well as the Kraven and Lizard character designs are truly impressive. The game is a huge leap forward for the franchise, with the PS5’s power fully utilized and previously inaccessible parts of New York City now open for exploration. Moreover, the gameplay demo also reveals the return of Black Cat and Prowler, characters that offer exciting storytelling opportunities for Peter and Miles respectively. Additionally, Wraith is introduced as a character that may be unfamiliar to casual players, but if Insomniac can deliver a proper side questline for her like Tombstone in the original game, it will certainly be a great addition for fans.
Tombstone’s Questline is the Perfect Style for Wraith Missions in Spider-Man 2
Many fans of Marvel’s Spider-Man have expressed their desire for more side villains in the game, given the vast array of antagonists in the wall-crawler's rogues' gallery. Nevertheless, the few side quests featuring named villains were impressive, and the battles against Taskmaster were particularly enjoyable. Likewise, the missions involving Tombstone were as good as anything in the main storyline.
Wraith, also known as Peter Parker's former police ally Yuri Watanabe, could have played a more prominent role in the game. For instance, she could have appeared during a main mission, with Peter or Miles encountering her during a pursuit. After being defeated, Wraith could flee, leading to players encountering her again at the end of a lengthy quest chain. It would be similar to how Tombstone appeared in an MJ stealth mission before becoming the target of Peter's pursuit outside of the main story.
The questline for Tombstone was unique in that it built up to a satisfying conclusion from the start. By going on side missions to track down the drug he was selling, players were able to beat down his henchmen and eventually confront him in a thrilling boss fight. This fight was unlike any other in the game and was followed by an interesting cutscene that showcased what made Tombstone special.
A similar format could be utilized for a Wraith questline, with players tracking her crimes throughout the city before confronting her in a unique boss battle. To add to the challenge, special enemies could be introduced in the side missions, such as rogue police officers using similar gadgets to Yuri's. This would prepare players for the Wraith fight, where she would wield stronger versions of these same gadgets.
The key takeaway from the Tombstone questline is the high level of quality it brought to the game, which should be emulated for Wraith's content in Marvel's Spider-Man 2. By treating her story like Tombstone's, with a focus on a satisfying boss fight, unique gameplay, and an interesting narrative, it would be some of the best side content in the game. Given the already packed main plot, this approach makes the most sense.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is currently in development for PS5.
