Unleashing Spider-Man 2's Ultimate Skill Tree

Spider-Man 2 introduces unique skill trees for Peter Parker and Miles Morales, offering exciting differences from previous games Discover new abilities and upgrade your favorite hero's combat and traversal skills in this highly anticipated sequel

Insomniac Games has revealed some exciting changes to Marvel's Spider-Man 2's skill tree system. Fans of the first Spider-Man Insomniac game and its Miles Morales sequel will remember the customizable skill trees that allowed players to enhance the abilities of Peter Parker and Miles Morales. However, with the introduction of multiple playable Spider-Men in Spider-Man 2, the skill tree system is undergoing a revamp to better suit the game's action-packed gameplay. In the previous games, players had three skill trees to choose from that focused on different aspects of combat. Peter Parker's skill trees were Innovator for creative crowd-control, Defender for combat survival, and Webslinger for mid-air and ranged combat. Miles Morales' skill trees were streamlined and focused on direct combat, Venom skills, and camouflage abilities. Each character brought their unique style to the game's thrilling combat sequences.

Players of Spider-Man 2 can seamlessly switch between playing as Peter Parker or Miles Morales, each with their own set of unique skills that can be upgraded through a skill tree system. Game director Ryan Smith explained to Eurogamer that in addition to the individual skill trees, there will also be a shared one for both characters to create a cohesive experience and maintain a sense of familiarity when switching between them.

Unleashing Spider-Man 2's Ultimate Skill Tree

In Spider-Man 2, Peter Parker's skill tree is set to undergo a significant overhaul compared to the original game, as pointed out by Smith. This is evident in the recent Spider-Man 2 gameplay trailer from the PlayStation showcase, where Parker's Symbiote abilities take center stage. The trailer showcases a range of explosive and violent abilities, such as a long-range punch that sticks enemies to walls, a dash that captures multiple enemies in goo and launches them in the air, and another ability that grabs multiple enemies and slams them onto the ground.

Compared to the first Spider-Man game from Insomniac, there's a clear shift in focus. Parker's original skill tree was centered around individual targets, resource management, and utilizing the environment to disarm or distract enemies. However, in Spider-Man 2, Parker's goal seems to be more focused on grouping up enemies and unleashing devastating combinations to demolish them. Stylistically, Parker can now summon arms, tendrils, and more to launch at enemies, which can combo into direct attacks or crowd control.

In contrast to Peter Parker's reinvention, Miles Morales is not undergoing significant changes, but is instead becoming more aware of his own powers. The game introduces an evolved Venom skill tree for Morales, which allows him to stealthily take out robotic drones, teleport short distances and explode in an electrical storm, as well as stun enemies mid-air with a shocking blast that can also affect those nearby. The Spider-Man: Miles Morales game also includes a Venom tree that focuses on Morales' ability to stun foes with Venom, either through a Venom Smash attack or with jumps and dashes. However, the new Venom abilities are more powerful and have a bigger impact, allowing Morales to teleport and shoot electricity at groups of enemies, while also retaining the Venom Smash move.

The third skill tree in Spider-Man 2 will be a joint venture between Peter Parker and Miles Morales, focusing on general Spider-Man abilities. It is possible that this tree includes Morales' gliding ability while traversing the city or the ability to create webbing lines freely while searching for stealth takedowns. Insomniac is enhancing the abilities that players already know from previous games rather than removing them, as is apparent here.

Insomniac has yet to reveal how they plan to improve the gameplay in Spider-Man 2, leaving fans uncertain about what to expect. However, it appears that the developer is aiming to deliver an even bigger and more thrilling experience than before. With both Parker and Morales equipped with new abilities to take down groups of enemies and counter stronger foes, it's possible that we'll see more enemies on-screen and face tougher challenges. As we wait for more details to emerge over the coming months, it's clear that Spider-Man 2 is shaping up to be an exciting release for PS5 in late 2023.
