Players will come across a variety of challenges in Diablo 4, including boss battles that have their own unique attack patterns and quirks. As players advance through the story, the enemies will level up alongside them to maintain a fair balance in each fight. However, certain bosses may prove to be more difficult than others due to their powerful attacks and extensive health bars.
These bosses are an integral part of the game's main story, and players must defeat them in order to progress further. Unlike World Bosses, which can be faced multiple times, players can only take on these story bosses once with each character.
8 Lilith's Lament
In Diablo 4, players will face their first major boss fight against Lilith's Lament. This encounter can be particularly challenging due to the player's lower level and limited combat abilities. It takes place during the quest "The Descent" towards the end of Act 1.
Lilith's Lament primarily relies on ranged shadow spells and a blood pool AoE ability. While these attacks can be predicted, players must remain highly mobile and agile to avoid them throughout the battle. In the second phase, a powerful knight will join the player and create a force field to protect against Lilith's wave attack, which covers the entire battle arena's floor.
7 Eidolon Of Orbei
The towering and ethereal shamanic entity known as The Eidolon of Orbei possesses a range of unique attacks that may catch players off guard. This formidable boss is encountered in Act 3 of the main storyline, specifically during the quest "Suffering Disquiet." The Eidolon employs a combination of traps and area-of-effect abilities in an attempt to restrict space and prevent players from finding an escape route.
One of the Eidolon's primary tactics involves deploying swirling red vortexes that not only drain the player's health but also impair their vision if they become trapped within. Additionally, the boss has the ability to summon Bone Walls, which can serve as both a means to ensnare the player and as a potential shield for the boss. Players must be prepared to swiftly attack and break through these walls, as they act almost like the boss's "minions," requiring constant attention and engagement. As the boss's health diminishes, the frequency of these attacks will intensify, making it crucial for players to maintain mobility and avoid becoming cornered or trapped.
6 Brol, The Tyrant King
In Act 3 of the campaign, players will encounter Brol, The Tyrant King, a formidable barbarian-type adversary armed with dual swords. Accompanied by his minions, the Maniacs, Brol presents a challenging foe during the "Descent Into Flame" quest. The battle arena is a confined space surrounded by lava, requiring players to adeptly evade Brol's and his minions' relentless assaults across the four stages of this boss encounter.
Brol employs a couple of primary attacks: a charging assault and a ground-smashing maneuver, both capable of inflicting significant harm. As Brol's health diminishes by a quarter, he will summon Maniacs to join the fight, descending from the ceiling. To achieve victory, players must skillfully evade Brol's powerful attacks while swiftly eliminating the subordinate enemies, enabling them to focus their damage output on the boss himself.
5 Andariel
Andariel, a beloved boss from Diablo 2, returns in Diablo 4 as one of the game's most iconic adversaries. Players encounter her in Act 4 during the quest "Anguish Incarnate," following a summoning ritual performed by Elias in Act 3. The battle against Andariel takes place amidst a treacherous sandstorm, posing an additional challenge as players must navigate and avoid damage from the swirling sands.
In combat, Andariel employs Rune Chains to ensnare the player, similar to the Bone Wall ability of the Eidolon of Oriel. Breaking these chains becomes crucial for players, as they must simultaneously attack the boss. Additionally, Andariel possesses the ability to launch projectiles and unleash powerful red streaks across the ground, requiring players to skillfully dodge these attacks. When Andariel eventually breaks free from her chains, she gains access to melee attacks, but players can exploit her vulnerability to staggering and focus their assaults during this window of opportunity.
4 Astaroth
Astaroth, a fearsome demon with horns, is summoned to Sanctuary by Lilith herself. Players will come across him in Act 2 during the quest "As The World Burns." What sets Astaroth apart is his three-headed mount, the Amalgam of Rage, making him one of the most formidable and distinctive bosses in the game.
To defeat Astaroth, players must focus on dodging his attacks and striking from behind. It is crucial to be wary of his powerful staff swing, which can potentially knock out the player in a single blow. Additionally, Astaroth unleashes a fireball AoE attack and Fire Breathing from the heads of the Amalgam of Rage. It is advisable to wear fire-resistant gear for this encounter and equip any items that can reduce the cooldown time for the Evade mechanic.
3 Elias
Elias, the summoner of Lilith, is a formidable caster type boss that players will face multiple times throughout Acts 3 and 5 of the story. The first encounter with Elias involves him summoning minions, requiring players to strategically thin them out while also dealing damage to him. In Act 5, Elias becomes even more challenging by incorporating a Crimson Ripple attack and amplifying the power of his previous attacks. Players who utilize ranged builds may have an advantage in evading his unique attack patterns.
2 Duriel, Lord Of Pain
Duriel, the Lord of Pain, is a formidable boss with an incredibly repulsive appearance. He appears in Act 6 during the quest "The Walls Shake," surrounded by smaller eggs that can hatch and serve as minions, posing a significant threat to players if not handled carefully.
In addition to its grotesque appearance, Duriel presents a challenge due to its diverse range of attacking abilities. It possesses a burrowing ability that is akin to teleportation, making it difficult to predict its movements. Furthermore, Duriel can unleash a ranged attack called the Belly Belch, leaving players with no safe haven within the relatively confined battle arena. The most effective strategy involves evading these attacks and focusing on attacking from behind. Additionally, employing area-of-effect abilities to handle the maggot swarm will greatly assist in overcoming this formidable foe.
1 Lilith
In the final quest "What Lies Ahead," players will face off against Lilith, the main antagonist of Diablo 4 and the Mother of Sanctuary. To stand a chance against this formidable foe, it is advised that players reach a minimum level of 50, as this is when they will have acquired the necessary skills for the battle.
Lilith will initially appear in her "Creator of Sanctuary" form, employing a combination of ground attacks and powerful melee sweeps to attack the players. As her health decreases, she will undergo a transformation into her more challenging "Daughter of Hatred" form. Adding to the difficulty, the battle arena will start to crumble and shrink, creating a tighter space for players to maneuver and increasing the danger they face. The key to defeating Lilith lies in capitalizing on moments when she is staggered and dealing as much damage as possible.
Diablo 4 is currently available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
