Adult Swim recently unveiled an exciting new anime series called Lazarus, created by the masterminds behind Cowboy Bebop and John Wick, Shinichiro Watanabe and Chad Stahelski. This action-packed animated series will be brought to life by the renowned studio MAPPA.
As reported by Vulture, MAPPA, known for their exceptional work on Attack on Titan and Chainsaw Man, will handle the animation for Lazarus. The story is set in the year 2052, where peace reigns due to the revolutionary drug called Hapuna. This drug has eradicated all illnesses and suffering from the world. However, the creator of Hapuna mysteriously disappears for three years, only to return with a chilling revelation - Hapuna will cause the death of everyone who has consumed it within three years. In a race against time, the Lazarus group is formed with the mission to find a solution for humanity's survival.
Cowboy Bebop's Creator Returns to Sci-Fi With John Wick-Style Action
Watanabe, the creator of Cowboy Bebop, is leading the creative team for Lazarus, a new anime series. Stahelski, known for his work on John Wick, will be choreographing the fight scenes. Watanabe has previously collaborated with MAPPA on the highly acclaimed thriller series Terror in Resonance. Lazarus aims to blend the thrilling intensity of Watanabe's previous work with a sci-fi setting, a departure from his previous comedic series Space Dandy. This collaboration also marks Stahelski's first venture into animation, promising exciting fight sequences.
While no release date has been announced, an early preview of Lazarus will be shown at the Adult Swim Festival on July 22, indicating that the series is well underway. Lazarus joins a lineup of successful anime collaborations brought to audiences by Adult Swim's Toonami block, including last year's horror series Housing Complex C, the revitalized FLCL, and the highly anticipated adaptation of Junji Ito's Uzumaki. Toonami's original anime projects have garnered positive feedback, and an anime series featuring the creator of Cowboy Bebop has great potential.
When Lazarus makes its debut, fans of Watanabe's work will surely be eager to watch it. However, with the addition of masterfully choreographed fights by Stahelski, the series appeals to a whole new fanbase who may have never explored anime before. The involvement of such renowned names gives Lazarus a chance to become the kind of Cowboy Bebop successor that Adult Swim has long been searching for.
