One D&D, the latest edition of Dungeons and Dragons, is set to release in 2024. Playtests for the game have brought significant changes to the base classes, such as the Fighter, along with gameplay rules and mechanics added by Wizards of the Coast. The developers will utilize the feedback from fans to ensure One D&D is well-balanced and refined before its official release.
Additionally, notable changes are being made to the Dungeon Master's Guide, making it more accessible by restructuring its chapters. The introduction of the Bastion system will provide the party with a customizable headquarters, and backgrounds will be reworked to enhance customization. Despite these changes, One D&D remains backward compatible with the 5th Edition. Therefore, players can expect familiar rules while still being excited about the latest updates and additions to the game's classes.
A Look into the Fighter’s Weapon Mastery Feature in One D&D
The skill sets of almost every class in One D&D are being enhanced and altered. This is especially evident in the Fighter, a versatile martial class, who will now have a new level one feature known as Weapon Mastery. This feature unlocks a unique secondary trait for each weapon. One noteworthy example is Cleave, which grants the Fighter an extra attack roll with the same weapon against a second creature within five feet of the initial hit, upon a successful hit.
Another intriguing ability within Weapon Mastery is Graze, which allows players to inflict significantly reduced damage (equal to the ability modifier they used) on enemies if they fail their attack roll. The current One D&D playtest weapon table includes a Mastery column that displays the specific weapon-related benefits accessible to the Fighter. For instance, Cleave can be used with heavy melee weapons such as the Glaive and Greataxe, which are known for their potential to strike multiple opponents with a single powerful blow.
The Fighter’s Subclass Roster Gets a Boost and a New Addition
Players who aspire to possess a character reminiscent of Jackie Chan in Rumble in the Bronx, utilizing primarily their fists, feet, and makeshift weapons such as barstools and beer mugs, will find great enjoyment in the Brawler subclass. As per the playtest, the Brawler chooses to forgo training with traditional weapons in exchange for acquiring the necessary skills to deliver formidable punches and devastating kicks, as well as transform innocuous objects into lethal weapons.
At the 3rd level, this subclass experiences a significant enhancement to their Unarmed Strikes, enabling them to inflict damage comparable to that of a regular weapon, solely relying on their fists. Furthermore, by the 7th level, they acquire the ability to perform an additional unarmed attack as a bonus action. This subclass excels in lively tavern brawls and intricate covert missions, where they must think on their feet and utilize everyday objects to carry out surprise takedowns and assassinations, much like Agent 47 in Hitman.
Fighter subclasses have been enhanced as well. At level 15, Battle Masters can now utilize one of their signature Maneuvers every turn for free, albeit with a slightly weaker Superiority Die. Meanwhile, Eldritch Knights have the option to exchange their extra attack for a cantrip, introducing versatility in both combat and roleplaying. As for Champions, upon reaching level 10, they are granted Heroic Advantage without cost on a regular basis.
Additionally, this class has received various other improvements. Fighters can now employ their self-healing ability, Second Wind, multiple times per day. They have also gained access to the Persuasion skill. A notable new addition is the Studied Attacks ability, available at level 13. This allows players to gain an advantage after a failed attack, reflecting the Fighter's development and strategic analysis of their opponent's moves. These enhancements and alterations enable players to explore greater creativity and dynamism with the Fighter, an initially perceived as a basic and uncomplicated class.
One D&D is currently in development and is set to release in 2024.
