Chinese portable console developer Ayaneo has unveiled its latest handheld system, the Ayaneo Flip DS, featuring a dual-screen design reminiscent of the iconic Nintendo DS. This new console is the result of Ayaneo's continued efforts in releasing innovative portable gaming devices, following the recent launch of the Ayaneo SLIDE to rival the Steam Deck. With a strong track record in the handheld gaming PC market, Ayaneo now shifts its attention towards emulating the form factor of Nintendo's highly successful hardware.
Ayaneo recently unveiled their latest handheld console, the Ayaneo Flip DS. Taking inspiration from the Nintendo DS, both in its form factor and name, this console boasts a 7-inch 120Hz top screen. On the clamshell design, there is a second screen located on the bottom portion; however, details about this bottom display are currently scarce. In addition to this, Ayaneo also announced the Flip KB, which features a keyboard instead of a second screen. The hardware has garnered excitement from fans due to its emulation capabilities, offering the opportunity to play many beloved DS games that are otherwise inaccessible.
The specifications and features of the device's second screen are still unknown, leaving uncertainty as to whether it will have a touch-screen display. Additionally, the price remains undisclosed. However, both models will be powered by the AMD Ryzen 7 7840U – the same chip found in other top gaming PC handhelds such as the Ayeno 2s.
While many nostalgic games from classic consoles are accessible through Nintendo Switch Online, the library of Nintendo DS games has yet to be included. Given the unique design of the handheld, it is uncertain whether these games will ever be featured on the service. Although the system was previously available as a virtual console on the Nintendo Wii U eShop, Nintendo unfortunately closed down the 3DS and Wii U eShops earlier this year.
Few classic games are currently available for commercial purchase, and the Nintendo DS library is a prime example of nostalgic titles that have been forgotten over time. This may be why Ayaneo has decided to draw inspiration from the iconic form factor. Currently, the only legitimate options for playing Nintendo DS games are on the original hardware or the 3DS family of consoles. However, with tech companies like Analogue gaining attention for their creation of devices like the Pocket or the recently released 4K Nintendo 64 console, it appears that the market is eager for a new way to enjoy classic DS games. As a result, the Ayaneo Flip DS is currently undergoing development.
