Baldur's Gate 3: Controversial Default Gameplay Setting Divides Players' Opinions on Fairness Discover how this supposed fairness feature is stirring up debate among gamers

Highlights

Baldur's Gate 3 players should consider turning off the default Karmic Dice setting as it may hinder their gameplay experience.

Opinions on the impact of Karmic Dice on enemy gameplay vary, leaving players uncertain about its actual effect.

Baldur’s Gate 3 fans may want to disable the default Karmic Dice setting for a better gameplay experience. While this option is intended to enhance fairness in dice rolls, some players have expressed concerns that it may have the opposite effect.

Similar to the mechanics of the Dungeons and Dragons TTRPG, Baldur’s Gate 3 operates on a d20 rolling system. The Karmic Dice setting, located in the User Settings of the Gameplay section in the options menu, aims to protect players from a streak of unfortunate rolls.

Larian Studios' director of publishing, Michael Douse, described the setting as an optional way for players to improve their luck when faced with constant failures in dice rolls. He compared the system to a "friendly DM" who would manipulate dice rolls when players experience a streak of bad luck. Douse recommended players to try out this default option if they find themselves failing too many rolls or becoming frustrated with the random number generator (RNG).

However, some players have discovered that the Karmic Dice feature is actually hindering their gameplay instead of helping it. In the Early Access version of Baldur’s Gate 3, Karmic Dice not only prevented players from having bad rolls, but also from having good ones. Although this seems to have been addressed in the full release, many players are still reporting that the game becomes significantly more challenging when this option is enabled.

Many players believe that Karmic Dice also affect enemies, which potentially leads to them taking 400% more damage. Despite assurances from the developers of Baldur's Gate 3 that this issue has been fixed for the official release, some fans still argue that combat feels more balanced without the presence of Karmic Dice. However, there are also players who claim that the absence of Karmic Dice makes the game much more challenging, creating conflicting reports that leave many unsure about whether or not to trust the system. Ultimately, it is recommended that each player follows Douse's advice and conducts their own experiments with Karmic Dice to determine their preferred gameplay experience.

Baldur's Gate 3 is available now for PC. The PlayStation 5 version will be available on September 6th, 2023. A version for Xbox Series X/S is still in development.
