Highlights

Cyberpunk 2077's upcoming Phantom Liberty DLC will revamp the police system and introduce vehicular combat mechanics for more fluid action.

CD Projekt Red decided to prioritize addressing the issues with the last-gen console versions of Cyberpunk 2077, leading to the development of their first paid DLC. The Gamescom 2023 promo showcased exciting additions such as built-in vehicle weapons, new Quickhacks, and a revamped police system that allows for backup from neighboring districts.

CD Projekt Red has unveiled a new promo video for their upcoming DLC, Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty. The video showcases the revamp of the game's police system and introduces new vehicular combat mechanics. This release comes two months after the announcement of the DLC's release date during the Opening Night Live broadcast leading up to the 2023 Gamescom event.

This expansion will be the sole paid DLC for Cyberpunk 2077, as the developer had initially planned for more extensive post-launch content. However, due to the game's troubled launch and the need to address issues with the last-generation console versions, CD Projekt Red had to divert resources towards fixing these problems. The efforts culminated in the release of the Cyberpunk 2077 1.6 update in September 2022. Consequently, the development team has been solely focused on the upcoming DLC ever since.

CDPR has unveiled new features of Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty through a three-minute video. The expansion will introduce a vehicular combat system that allows players to use melee and ranged weapons while driving, adding more dynamic action to the gameplay. The recent Gamescom 2023 video showcased previously unseen mechanics, such as the ability to initiate a jumping attack from a motorcycle.

In addition to the advanced combat system, players can utilize built-in vehicle weapons like rocket launchers and machine guns, reminiscent of those seen in 007 movies. The video also revealed three new Quickhacks for road combat: Self-destruct, Floor It, and Emergency Brake. Self-destruct, requiring 15 Cyberdeck RAM sticks, is a costly Quickhack, while the other two abilities will cost six sticks each.

Once the road carnage ensues, the players will inevitably catch the attention of the NCPD. This is when the new police system comes into play. Instead of police units materializing out of nowhere, they will be called in from nearby districts to intercept the player. In addition, the NCPD will have the ability to set up road barricades and call in MaxTac if the player reaches the maximum fourth wanted level.

The Gamescom 2023 promo not only provides an overview of the new gameplay mechanics but also suggests that the upcoming DLC may not introduce new fixers to the popular RPG. The video reveals that V will be welcomed into Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty's Dogtown by Mr. Hands, an established character in the base game.

Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty launches September 26 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
