Negative reviews of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania surprised Marvel Studios, who believed they had a good film but audiences disagreed.
Marvel Studios is acknowledging a lack of understanding regarding audience preferences, prompting significant modifications in their endeavors and alterations to their television show structure. As Marvel strives to enhance their streaming series, speculations arise about the possibility of an MCU reboot following Avengers: Secret Wars. This prospective reboot has the potential to reignite fan enthusiasm, yet it is uncertain whether it would result in enhanced overall quality.
The reviews for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania have surprised Marvel Studios, as they believed they had made a good film, despite most audiences having a different opinion.
Since the release of Avengers: Endgame, the quality of MCU films has been lacking. Movies like Eternals, Thor: Love and Thunder, and Ant-Man 3 have failed to impress both critics and fans. However, films such as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 briefly restored fans' hope in Marvel Studios' ability to produce good content. Unfortunately, these hopes were quickly dashed with the disappointing release of Secret Invasion. It seems Marvel Studios genuinely believed that at least one of these projects would be successful.
On the most recent episode of The Watch podcast, Joanna Robinson, the author of MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios, uncovered that the Marvel Studios executives were taken aback by the negative reviews received by Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania. "Quantumania truly caught them off guard because they believed they had something exceptional. They all internally believed, 'Everyone will adore this,'" stated Robinson. "However, upon its release, it failed to resonate with audiences as they expected. It made them realize that their internal perception no longer aligns with the desires of the public. With Quantumania, they were convinced they had released a remarkable film. Unfortunately, many people didn't share the same sentiment."
Marvel Studios, awakened by these negative reviews, particularly those of Ant-Man 3, found themselves uncertain of audience preferences. Consequently, they underwent significant adjustments to their projects. In response to their dissatisfaction with the footage they had already filmed, Marvel Studios proceeded to dismiss the writers and directors of Daredevil: Born Again. Currently, Marvel Studios is revamping their show production strategy, now embracing a structure akin to traditional network TV, featuring multiple seasons instead of the usual 6-9 episode events.
This news should please many fans, who are relieved that Marvel Studios acknowledges the need for improvement in their streaming series. Although the studio has not announced any plans to address their recent mediocre performances in film, rumblings suggest that they may reboot the MCU following Avengers: Secret Wars. Such a reboot could reignite fan interest in the characters and the shared universe, but it does not guarantee an enhancement in quality.
