Gran Turismo director Neill Blomkamp has shared that the only crash that occurred on-set was during the filming of a deleted post-credits scene in which Orlando Bloom was driving. The scene depicted Bloom's character, Danny Moore, a Nissan marketing executive, who came up with the idea for a Gran Turismo video game tournament sponsored by Nissan. Blomkamp mentioned in an interview with MotorTrend that the film initially included a scene where Danny was driving, but it had to be cut due to a minor car accident during testing.

Orlando had a strong desire to have a driving scene in the film because his character does not drive throughout the movie. Hence, we considered adding a scene towards the end of the film, possibly as a post-credit scene, just for fun. To make this happen, the stunt coordinator and head of stunts had to approve Orlando's driving skills. They conducted a test lap where he drove alongside an instructor who assessed his performance. Unfortunately, he lost control of the car and ended up damaging the front quarter panel, suspension, and wheel. Thankfully, the situation was not catastrophic, and it was the only accident we encountered. I believe Orlando is actually a capable driver; it was just an unfortunate turn of events.

Why Gran Turismo Didn't Need A Post-Credits Scene

Gran Turismo sets itself apart from other video game movies by being a biopic that delves into the early stages of racer Mardenborough's career. Focusing on his time at GT Academy and the races that shaped his professional journey, the film highlights the crucial support he received from Nissan, which allowed his career to take flight.

Although it may have been intriguing to see Bloom behind the wheel of a car in a Gran Turismo post-credits scene, doing so might have detracted from the central narrative highlighting Jann's accomplishments on the track. Since Danny, Bloom's character, does not drive throughout the film, including such a sequence might have felt out of place. Nevertheless, if this scene had been included, it would have added a touch of enjoyment to the movie's final moments.
