Summary

Executive producer Michael Dinner revealed that Boyd Crowder's unexpected appearance in the finale of Justified: City Primeval was intended purely for enjoyment. This cameo was strategically included to acknowledge the absence of Walton Goggins' character.

Goggins enthusiastically embraced the idea and indicated his willingness to participate in future endeavors.

Revealed by the executive producer of City Primeval, the unexpected cameo appearance in the finale is explained. The absence of the beloved character Boyd Crowder had been a lingering question in FX's revival, as actor Walton Goggins had previously mentioned his non-involvement in the new series. However, in a surprising turn of events, Goggins makes a cameo appearance in the Justified: City Primeval finale. Crowder finds himself incarcerated, although his time behind bars is short-lived.

Executive producer and co-showrunner Michael Dinner discussed Boyd's cameo in the season finale of Justified: City Primeval season 1 in an interview with TVLine. He revealed the behind-the-scenes details and also shared the pitch from his fellow showrunner, David Andron, that sparked the idea into action. Walton, who had been busy with press for HBO's "Righteous Gemstones" and other commitments, showcased his talent as a poker player. However, the main motive behind Boyd's cameo was purely for enjoyment.

The decision was made not to include a scene where Raylan struggles to understand Mansell. Instead, in the middle of the episodes, he goes to talk to imprisoned Boyd Crowder, also known as the Hannibal Lecter character, to learn more about the villain. David's pitch was to address the curiosity surrounding Walton's absence by having fun with it at the end. This was the intention.

We then shared the idea with Walton, and he was enthusiastic about it. He was actually the first to suggest that if they had a good time, they could always have another adventure since his character is still out there in the world. It was great to have him back, and both he and Tim delivered fantastic performances. Their characters have matured over the years, and it feels like they have a decade of experiences behind them. It's not just a continuation of where we left off. But watching Walton portray this character again after spending time in prison was a blast.

More to come...
