Undead Unluck episode 1 review: An unlikely duo meet, hilarity ensues
In Undead Unluck episode 1, the main focus revolves around the unlikely duo of Fuuko Izumo and a mysterious man known as "Undead" (later revealed as Andy). Fuuko, an 18-year-old girl, possesses the power of "Unluck," which brings misfortune to those around her. On the other hand, Andy is a century-old immortal who cannot be killed. The episode opens with Fuuko attempting to end her own life, only to be interrupted by Andy, who steps in to save her.
Since the tragic incident when Fuuko was eight years old, her life has been marked by isolation. The manifestation of her "Unluck" ability caused the untimely death of her parents and over 200 others in a devastating airplane engine failure. This incident has left Fuuko with an immense sense of guilt and fear, preventing her from truly living her life to the fullest, as she is afraid of causing harm to others.

Regrettably, or perhaps fortunately, she captures the attention of a peculiar gentleman named Andy, whom she soon nicknames the "Undead." Andy, a boisterous individual with a complete disregard for personal boundaries, is driven by the singular objective of experiencing "the most extraordinary demise" imaginable. Unfortunately, even being struck by a high-speed train that results in the separation of his body from his head fails to satisfy his quest for a superbly memorable death, as evidenced by his initial encounter with Fuuko — her firsthand observation of his remarkable ability to regenerate his body.
Things take a turn for the worse when Andy forcefully takes Fuuko and invades her personal space in order to intentionally activate her "Unluck" ability during the first episode of Undead Unluck. However, their relationship begins to improve only after he rescues her from death, helps her with her haircut, and their combined "Unluck" power ends up saving both of them.
The unlikely duo: Targets?

Unfortunately, the delightful escapades and playful moments have come to an end. Our intrepid duo suddenly find themselves targeted by a malevolent faction armed with swords, knives, and guns. This nefarious group has dispatched a formidable squad to apprehend our protagonists, seeking to exploit their extraordinary abilities for sinister purposes. As confusion reigns supreme, their enigmatic leader bewilders Fuuko and Andy with cryptic terms like "Negator" and "UMA".
As per their leader's statement, Fuuko possesses powers that can be lethal, while Andy is akin to an elixir of immortality. Consequently, Fuuko finds herself held captive, whereas Andy meets a grim fate of decapitation. However, a twist of fate is on Andy's side when the Unluck effect, with a delayed response, comes into play. Struck by lightning, he manages to wield its power to eliminate the thug who had captured his severed head.
Andy's secret weapon is finally revealed: he can access a vast collection of memories and combat skills simply by pulling a card from his head. With this newfound power, he swiftly defeats the enemies who threaten him and Fuuko. The hold on Fuuko is broken, thanks to Andy's intervention. In a dramatic turn of events, Fuuko kisses Andy, triggering an extraordinary Unluck effect - a meteorite descends upon them.
Having successfully saved one another, Andy and Fuuko decide to stick together. However, before they can fully solidify their bond, Fuuko gives Andy the nickname "Andy" and Andy suggests that they make love in order to truly test the limits of Unluck. This awkward proposal ruins the moment, causing Fuuko to flee once again. Andy chases after her as the first episode of Undead Unluck comes to a close.

Undead Unluck episode 1 is a hilarious introduction to a ridiculous concept and explores the question of compatibility between the two protagonists. Eventually, they do find harmony, but not before encountering numerous comedic mishaps. These include Andy saving Fuko's life, assisting her in cutting her hair, and Fuko reciprocating by gradually understanding and harnessing her Unluck powers to vanquish their assailants.
The animation is excellently executed, capturing the charm of Fuuko's manga excerpt and providing intricate details in the reconstruction of Andy's body, as well as delving into the poignant aspects of Fuko's backstory. Additionally, the show briefly suspends the humor to demonstrate the characters' attempts at bonding, such as when Andy aids Fuko in her haircutting endeavor. Finally, the episode concludes with a resolution to support and assist one another.
The initial journey of this unexpected duo carries a captivating aura of enigma. As the series unfolds, audiences will anxiously anticipate the revelation of the true nature of "UMAs" or "Negators." Undoubtedly, even the first episode of Undead Unluck offers tantalizing hints of a more intricate narrative, leaving viewers eagerly awaiting the resolution of these mysteries.
