Acclaimed director Ridley Scott recently shared how he chose to cast actor Paul Mescal, who was relatively unknown at the time, as the lead in Gladiator 2. In this sequel to Scott's Academy Award-winning historical epic, Mescal will portray Lucius, the nephew of the power-hungry Commodus, previously played by Joaquin Phoenix. While Mescal is still fairly new to the movie industry, he made his debut in the 2021 film The Lost Daughter, written and directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal.
During an interview with Total Film magazine (via Games Radar), Scott recounted how he came across Mescal while watching the Irish miniseries Normal People in 2020. Despite it not being his usual genre, the director was captivated by Mescal's performance, prompting him to cast him in Gladiator 2. Scott even suggested that Mescal has the potential to become as well-known as Russell Crowe, the original star of Gladiator. Take a look at Scott's comments below.
"
Will Paul Mescal Live Up To Russell Crowe’s Award-Winning Gladiator Performance?
Can Paul Mescal become as famous as Russell Crowe? Absolutely. Despite not typically enjoying shows like Normal People, I found myself captivated by the first four episodes which I binge-watched in succession. It made me question, 'Who is this incredibly talented Paul Mescal?' I couldn't resist watching the entire series. This led me to an intriguing thought about Gladiator 2, as the script was impressively well-executed. Paul kept popping up in my mind. The rest, as they say, is history."Although Crowe gained global recognition for his role as Maximus Decimus Meridius, a Roman general turned slave in the film Gladiator (2000), the renowned Australian actor had already established himself as a skilled and self-assured performer before director Ridley Scott cast him in the iconic role. In addition to numerous awards he received earlier in his career in Australian film and television, Crowe had previously been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in The Insider (1999), where he shared the screen with Al Pacino.
In comparison, Scott's new leading man has much less screen time than Crowe did before his debut in the Colosseum. Despite this, Mescal has already achieved an impressive collection of accolades, including an Emmy Award nomination for his work in Normal People, the series that initially caught Scott's attention. Additionally, Mescal's role in Aftersun has significantly boosted his career, leading to a nomination for an Academy Award for Best Actor.
Overall, Mescal possesses the necessary talent to deliver a memorable performance as Lucilla's son, played by Connie Nielsen. It remains to be seen whether he will receive the same critical acclaim that Crowe once did, but Scott has full confidence in Mescal as the new star of Gladiator 2.
