Russell Crowe, the star of Gladiator, reprises his role as Maximus in a brief appearance that challenges the original movie's betrayal and focuses on his character's death. While Gladiator 2 is being filmed, Crowe shares a playful video on his personal Twitter account, in which Maximus makes an unexpected comeback.
Was Maximus' Return Ever Considered For Gladiator 2?
Although Russell Crowe will not be returning for Gladiator 2, initial plans for the sequel did envision the comeback of Maximus, which led to the consideration of various surprising story concepts. While ideas conceived in the early 2000s focused on exploring prequel events revolving around Maximus, the sequel also involved bringing back the character in some way. This concept was taken to extraordinary heights in a script draft penned by Nick Cave, where Maximus is resurrected as an immortal warrior with the mission to prevent the spread of Christianity, effectively tracing Crowe's portrayal of the character throughout human history.
Although the concepts for Maximus' resurrection in Gladiator 2 were ultimately discarded, Russell Crowe will not be involved in the sequel. Despite Connie Nielsen reprising her role as Lucilla, the mother of Lucius and Maximus' lover, Crowe has made it clear that he was not asked to return. This decision by the director to leave Crowe out of the sequel suggests that the previously planned flashback revealing Maximus' relationship to Lucius has been omitted.
While fans of Gladiator may be disappointed that Maximus won't be making a return in Gladiator 2, Crowe's video provides a light-hearted parody of the sequel's previous plans and speculation. The video allows audiences to see Crowe reprising his role as Maximus with a twist, while also emphasizing his lack of involvement in the follow-up. Although Maximus may not physically return, his presence will still have a significant impact on the plot as Lucius embarks on his own journey.
