Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty is divided into two primary parts. Firstly, there is the "Tanker" section where Solid Snake infiltrates a US Navy Tanker to locate a new Metal Gear. With the assistance of Otacon, players must navigate through the Tanker as it falls under the control of an enemy force determined to steal the new Metal Gear developed by the Navy. This section serves as a shorter but effective tutorial for mastering the game's mechanics.
In the Tanker section of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, players initially possess a Tranquilizer Pistol, Camera, and Cigarettes, which prove valuable for maneuvering through the Tanker and dealing with potential threats. However, Snake must acquire an additional item to overcome a specific obstacle in the lower decks. This guide will provide information on the location of the USP (Universale Selbstladepistole or "universal self-loading pistol") and its designated usage.
Where to Find the USP
Players must make their way to the ship's Bridge in order to obtain the USP. To reach it, they should proceed forward and stay close to the right-hand side from where Snake starts the game. They will come across a door and a staircase in this area. Ascending the staircase will take them to a section where a guard patrols near another door.
Neutralize the guard at the ship entrance either by using the Tranquilizer Pistol or by incapacitating them through choking or breaking their neck. This will allow access to the ship. Upon entering the ship, a cutscene will reveal the presence of an enemy soldier, marked by their shadow. Proceed downstairs and eliminate the guard patrolling the hallway in this lower section. Continue through the hallway and make your way to the leftmost side of the area. Look for a staircase on the far side to ascend to the upper level.
Players should move towards the wall that has a camera on it and press up against it in order to smoothly slide past the camera and reach another staircase. Once on the next level, they will find themselves on Deck D, where they will encounter an explosive trap that needs to be tackled. Players should go prone and carefully crawl under the lasers, then swiftly eliminate the guard with a tranquilizer. Next, they should proceed to the left and locate a staircase that leads to the bridge.
Upon reaching the Bridge, Snake will verify the ship's direction, and players should then exit through the left door to initiate a boss fight.
Engage in a boss fight against Olga, who utilizes various strategies in the environment to disrupt Snake's accuracy. Successfully surprise her by swiftly changing your position behind cover and continuously shoot her with Tranquilizer shots. As she seeks refuge and shoots the tarpaulin, target the remaining straps to release it and reveal her vulnerability. Counter her attempt to blind Snake by shooting directly into the light source to shatter it.
Once Snake has defeated Olga he will be rewarded with the USP. Players can grab ammo for it from the ship's Bridge on their way back downstairs.
Where to Use the USP
In addition to its effectiveness as a lethal weapon against adversaries, the USP proves to be essential for navigating the Tanker and is crucial for completing this particular phase of the game. Once players acquire the USP, they must progress deeper into the ship, encountering numerous additional enemies along the way. Ultimately, they will reach a section deep within the vessel where access is obstructed by laser barriers. Otacon will provide instructions on how to disable these barriers by shooting the control unit, noting that the Tranquilizer Pistol lacks the necessary firepower to break through.
If the USP has been obtained by the players, Otacon will mention that it is ideal for disabling the control unit. By aiming carefully, players can dismantle the control units for the three laser barriers, granting access to the next area. Moving forward, players will encounter a network of tunnels guarded by numerous sentries, requiring effective usage of the Tranquilizer Pistol and Snake's hand-to-hand combat proficiency.
After navigating through the area, Snake will encounter a group of armed soldiers that he will have to defeat. The most efficient weapon to handle this situation is the USP. Given the number of enemies, it is advised to take cover and aim for headshots whenever possible for swift eliminations. Once all of the soldiers have been dealt with, Snake can proceed to the final part of the Tanker. This will initiate a cutscene involving Revolver Ocelot. After Ocelot's betrayal is revealed, Snake's objective is to locate Metal Gear Ray and complete the Tanker section.
