The No Hard Feelings creative team is defending the film's highly debated premise. In this movie, Maddie (played by Jennifer Lawrence), a 32-year-old, is hired by a middle-aged couple (portrayed by Matthew Broderick and Laura Benati) to go on dates with their 19-year-old son (Andrew Barth Feldman). The couple's intention is to expose their sheltered son to more life experiences. No Hard Feelings is directed by Gene Stupnitsky, the director of Good Boys.
The team is now addressing critics who deem the premise of No Hard Feelings controversial. During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Benati referred to the film as a satirical "cautionary tale" that serves as a warning against overprotective parenting. Broderick supported Benati's statement by explaining that No Hard Feelings delves into the repercussions when parents meddle with the natural course of events. Producers Marc Provissiero and Naomi Odenkirk mentioned that the film was inspired by a real-life Craigslist ad with a similar request to that of Benati and Broderick's characters in the movie. Benati further elaborated by saying:
"It serves as a cautionary tale for helicopter parents who excessively shield their children from the realities of the world. By confining them to a protective bubble, these parents unwittingly encourage the opposite and irrational behavior displayed here. This story presents a satirical perspective on the consequences that can arise when children are not given the opportunity to navigate and discover things independently. Ultimately, this leads to a lifetime of curated experiences for the child." Said Broderick.
It appears that when children start school, some parents become scared that their kids will be happy, make friends, and take care of themselves. They become so desperate to ensure a successful transition that they will go to great lengths. Having personally experienced this challenging time, I believe it is crucial to allow children to navigate it independently. However, these particular parents choose to interfere with the natural process.

"About six months later, I met up with Gene Stupnitsky for drinks. During our dinner conversation, he expressed his search for a talent similar to Jennifer Lawrence. It was then that I suddenly recalled a Craigslist ad that Naomi Odenkirk had shown me six months earlier. Initially, Stupnitsky didn't believe me, so I had to retrieve it from my phone and present it to him. After seeing it, he agreed to write a script based on it on speculation."
"Lastly, Stupnitsky elaborated on the team's objective to address the 'ick factor' in No Hard Feelings."
Why No Hard Feelings Is So Controversial
I would be surprised if you felt that way after watching the movie. We went to great lengths to ensure that the uncomfortable factor was minimized as it had the potential to become that. ... Our approach was rooted in humanism, and I believe that's the best approach one can hope for.No Hard Feelings faced continuous backlash on social media for several months before its release. The initial trailer, unveiled in March, exposed the film's daring concept where Lawrence engaged in a romantic relationship with a 19-year-old individual. This ignited criticism from the audience, who strongly perceived the presence of an unsettling "ick factor" that the creative team aimed to avoid. The situation worsened when a more provocative trailer was unveiled in May, causing viewers to engage in further discussions regarding the inappropriate central relationship depicted in the film.

The audience's concern regarding No Hard Feelings is justified, given the notable differences between 19-year-old Percy and 32-year-old Maddie. Percy is depicted as an awkward teenager, while Maddie is a struggling adult. This age and maturity gap can understandably make viewers uncomfortable.
To address this unease, the No Hard Feelings team is determined to change how the movie is perceived. They highlight the true story behind the Craigslist ad that inspired the film and delve into its themes of helicopter parenting. By doing so, they aim to redeem No Hard Feelings in the eyes of viewers. While complete elimination of criticism may not be possible, this effort represents a step towards convincing skeptics that the film has more to offer than just a creepy premise.
