Would you like to disable the grouping of windows from the same app in your taskbar on Windows 11? If yes, you can easily modify a setting in your PC's Settings app. We will guide you on how to do this, as well as how to re-enable taskbar icon grouping if you change your preference.
How to Uncombine Taskbar Icons on Windows 11
Windows 11 offers an option in Settings that you can tweak to make your taskbar either group or ungroup icons.
To start, simply right-click on the taskbar and select "Taskbar Settings".
Alternatively, press the Windows key and the letter "i" at the same time to open the Settings menu. From there, click on "Personalization" in the left sidebar and then choose "Taskbar" from the options displayed on the right side of the screen.
To modify the taskbar behaviors, follow these steps:
1. Expand the menu by selecting "Taskbar Behaviors."
2. At the bottom of the expanded menu, locate the "Combine Taskbar Buttons and Hide Labels" dropdown menu.
3. Click on the dropdown menu and choose the option "Never."
By doing so, you will ensure that Windows never groups your taskbar icons.
And instantly, Windows will ungroup any grouped icons on your taskbar.
To revert to the default option of grouping your taskbar icons, select "Always" from the dropdown menu. Alternatively, choose "When Taskbar is Full" to only group icons when the taskbar becomes full. This concludes the process of customizing the appearance of your taskbar on your Windows PC.
What If You Don’t See the Option to Ungroup Taskbar Icons?
If you don’t find the option to uncombine taskbar icons in your Windows 11 Settings app, you may be running an old Windows version.
To bring the feature to your PC, simply update your system version. Follow these steps: Open Settings, select "Windows Update," and click on "Check for Updates." If you don't see the feature yet, Microsoft is still in the process of rolling it out to you. Just be patient. And that's all you need to do to have separate icons for each open instance of an app on your Windows taskbar. Enjoy the enhanced functionality!
Editor's P/S
As a true passionate fan of Windows 11, I am always looking for ways to customize and improve my taskbar. I was thrilled to discover the new feature that allows you to ungroup taskbar icons. This has been a long-awaited feature for many users, and I am glad that Microsoft has finally added it.
Ungrouping taskbar icons has several benefits. First, it makes it easier to see which apps are open. When icons are grouped together, it can be difficult to tell which app is which. This can be especially frustrating if you have multiple windows of the same app open. Second, ungrouping taskbar icons makes it easier to manage your windows. When icons are grouped together, it can be difficult to move or resize windows. This can be especially frustrating if you are trying to work with multiple windows at the same time.
