CBS News reported that Coats dropped the stolen merchandise and attempted to flee, but Guerrero gave chase and ultimately shot him. Although Coats was unarmed, details regarding the exact sequence of events remain uncertain. What is clear is that Coats succumbed to his injuries approximately three hours after the shooting occurred. Guerrero, who has been charged with manslaughter, has since been released on $25,000 bail. He has expressed remorse to Coats' family, but the family has chosen not to comment on the situation.
