GameStop reportedly terminated an employee who appeared in a TikTok prank video. Prank videos are prevalent on TikTok, and the video game retail giant has become a frequent subject of ridicule on the platform.
It is not unusual to witness TikTok pranksters visiting nearby GameStop stores and teasing the staff. One commonly performed prank involves TikTokers trying to trade in counterfeit video games with absurd titles or box art to observe the employees' reactions. The majority of GameStop employees featured in these videos do not find the prank amusing, and a few have even resorted to contacting law enforcement.
Content creator Seth Meiring recently shared a TikTok video in which he was seen pretending to trade in a counterfeit video game called Cousin Kisser: The Game for Xbox One at a GameStop store. The game's box art portrayed a GameStop employee, known as Dawesome on TikTok, and Lucy Hale from Pretty Little Liars. It is common for GameStop employees in similar videos to react with anger or annoyance, leading to a running joke on TikTok that there are no relaxed GameStop employees. However, Dawesome played along with the joke, humorously claiming that the employee on the box art was actually their cousin.
As the video progresses, a GameStop customer becomes aware of the situation and intentionally blocks the camera, expressing their disapproval of filming employees without consent. Meiring refers to this person as a "cousin kisser," suggesting that they are overly strict about following rules. After a brief exchange of words, Meiring leaves the fictional Cousin Kisser "game" with Dawesome and exits the store. It is worth noting that the video has garnered over 2.4 million views and 411,000 likes as of the time of writing.
GameStop prank videos, like this one on TikTok and YouTube, are incredibly common. However, unlike others, this particular video resulted in Dawesome losing his job. In a response to Meiring's prank video, Dawesome shared that the GameStop customer was upset with him for not intervening to stop the recording. As a result, the incident was reported to corporate, leading his boss to make the decision to terminate his employment. Dawesome expressed his disappointment, acknowledging that there isn't much he can do about it.
With over 659,000 views and 93,000 likes, Dawesome's video has gained significant attention. TikTok users have flooded the comment section of Meiring's video, trying to inform the content creator about the unfortunate outcome. This is not the first time that a TikTok prank video has had unintended consequences, and it is unlikely to be the last.
