Some Street Fighter 6 fans are unhappy with the high price of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles skins, which cost $15 each, totaling $60 for all four.
Capcom could have considered offering all four TMNT costumes as a bundle for $15, which would have been a more reasonable price. The pricing of these avatar costumes raises concerns about the potential future costs of collaborations with other franchises in Street Fighter 6 and the wider industry's approach to generating revenue.
Street Fighter 6 fans are displeased with the high prices of the recently announced Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles skins. The game launched in early June and is expected to be a successful year for fighting games, with Mortal Kombat 1 set for release in September and rumors of Tekken 8 before the end of 2023.
Within just two months of its release, Street Fighter 6 has already collaborated with other franchises. Before the launch of Capcom's Exoprimal, a trailer featured a mechanical version of Ryu, the iconic Street Fighter character, becoming available in the dinosaur-themed shooter this Fall. Additionally, popular Street Fighter characters Chun-Li, Cammy, Luke, and Ryu have joined the battle royale game PUBG. Most recently, as part of the annual fighting game event EVO, Street Fighter 6 announced its next DLC character A.K.I and a collaboration with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, coinciding with the release of the new animated Mutant Mayhem movie.
Fans of Street Fighter 6 are becoming increasingly frustrated with the high cost of the four TMNT skins available. Each individual TMNT costume is priced at $15, meaning that if someone wants all four turtle costumes, they would have to pay a total of $60, which is the same price as the Street Fighter 6 game itself. The fact that these costumes can only be used for players' created avatars in World Tour mode or online Avatar Battles, and not for the established Street Fighter 6 characters, makes the situation even more disappointing. Instead of offering each TMNT costume separately, it would have made more sense for Capcom to offer a bundle of all four costumes for $15. Although this would still be expensive for a set of avatar costumes, it would be a more reasonable option. Another alternative could have been to offer just one turtle costume, allowing players to change characters in the "change color" menu of the World Tour clothing shops. It is unlikely that Capcom will reduce the prices of the TMNT skins at this point, but there is a possibility that they may consider doing so once the hype around the Mutant Mayhem movie subsides.
With characters from another franchise making their debut in Street Fighter 6, it will be intriguing to witness the pricing strategies for future collaborations with popular franchises. The gaming industry has been engaged in extensive discussions about monetization, ranging from season passes and loot boxes to the current trend of battle passes. As Street Fighter 6 forges ahead with its post-launch plans, including the arrival of A.K.I in the Fall and at least two additional DLC characters in early 2024, it is hoped that future avatar costumes will be more affordable compared to the game itself. Street Fighter 6 is presently available on PC, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S platforms.
