Why X-Men Origins - Wolverine Got Deadpool So Wrong

Deadpool is famously referred to as the Merc with a Mouth in the comic books because he possesses exceptional killing skills and an unparalleled ability to engage in non-stop banter, giving him a witty edge similar to that of Spider-Man in the Marvel Comics universe. Ryan Reynolds has flawlessly encapsulated this essential characteristic of the character in both of his standalone Deadpool movies. However, X-Men Origins: Wolverine completely missed the mark when it came to portraying this aspect of Deadpool.

In the Wolverine origin movie, Reynolds' Wade Wilson's mouth was sewn shut, which caused him to lose one of the mutant's most defining traits. The movie also made other controversial choices, such as deviating from Deadpool's iconic red and black suit seen in Reynolds' Deadpool movies and replacing it with strange tattoos in the X-Men film.

Not only did Deadpool lose his ability to make jokes and have a noticeable visual difference from his comic book portrayal, but his powers were also significantly changed in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. In the film, Deadpool, referred to as Weapon XI, acquired long blades that extended from his hands, the ability to teleport, control over technology, an Adamantium skeleton, optic blasts, and more. These alterations resulted in a vastly different version of Deadpool compared to what Marvel fans will witness in the upcoming Deadpool 3 in the MCU.
