Unbelievable: David Letterman Ditches Studio for Grocery Store! Lana Del Rey Takes on Waffle House Waitressing!

David Letterman is following in Lana Del Rey’s footsteps by trading in his Hollywood job for a role as a grocery store clerk.

After the singer, aged 38, gained attention for working as a waitress at an Alabama Waffle House, Letterman, aged 76, surprised customers at a Hy-Vee grocery store in Iowa on Friday, July 21. He shared a behind-the-scenes look at his shift with his fans online.

To start off, Letterman bought "cheesy breadsticks and flatbread pizza" and reminisced about his previous job at an independently owned grocery store in his hometown of Indianapolis, Indiana. "If I can give something back to the marketing community, I would like to do that. However, I am short on time," he explained in an Instagram video posted on Sunday, July 23.

The comedian shared his grocery knowledge and expertise with two store employees by helping them with daily tasks like cleaning up spills in the aisles and making announcements over the store's speaker system, including the one that celery is "completely free" for the day.

Using his unique sense of humor, Letterman playfully opened a can of Campbell's soup and took a sip directly from the container while assisting in organizing canned goods. He joked, "That's tasty," before offering the can to one of his colleagues, who willingly took a sip.

Letterman's workday at Hy-Vee concluded with a humorous twist as he playfully offered to accompany a customer home after spotting their shopping cart filled with chocolate chip cookie ingredients. In addition to indulging in candy and baked goods, he also dabbled as a bag boy during his "fantastic" time at the store.

Hy-Vee expressed gratitude to Letterman for his visit by posting a picture on Facebook. The store's caption read, "You never know who you'll run into while shopping at Hy-Vee. Thanks for stopping by, David Letterman!"

During his visit to Hy-Vee, Letterman also attended a sporting event. His car from Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing team participated in the Hy-Vee IndyCar Race at the Iowa Speedway on Sunday. Meanwhile, Del Rey puzzled her fans with her recent change of location, as she was spotted working at an Alabama diner.

On Thursday, July 20, the Grammy-nominated artist delighted fans by taking pictures, serving coffee, waiting tables, and chatting with customers. One fan playfully remarked on Twitter (now known as X) that even Lana Del Rey needs a break from singing about summertime sadness. They also jokingly revealed that Waffle House in Alabama is the place to go when craving breakfast grub, thanks to Lana's recent shift there. Prior to her Waffle House adventure, the singer was seen pampering herself with a trip to a local nail salon in Alabama.

Del Rey’s reps have not responded to We’s request for comment about the meaning behind her Alabama visit.
