Ubisoft's response to the rumors regarding the cancelation of the Immortals Fenyx Rising sequel casts doubt on the game's current development status, as the company's comments failed to instill confidence in its future.According to the initial report, the sequel was purportedly scrapped due to Ubisoft's focus on larger franchises such as Assassin's Creed, a claim that was acknowledged by the company.
Ubisoft's reluctance to confirm the cancellation may be attributed to the fact that the sequel was never officially announced. Typically, the company only discusses cancelations of undisclosed projects with investors. In response to a recent rumor about the cancellation of the sequel to Immortals Fenyx Rising, Ubisoft provided a response. Although they did not explicitly confirm the claim, their official comments do not instill much confidence in the possibility of another Immortals Fenyx Rising game in the near future.
Renamed from Gods and Monsters, Immortals Fenyx Rising was released in late 2020 to positive feedback from both critics and players. Following its success, Ubisoft Quebec began working on a follow-up game, codenamed Oxygen, which was described as more of a spinoff than a traditional sequel. In July 2022, rumors emerged about the setting of Immortals Fenyx Rising 2, but no further information was revealed until a year later when reports of its cancellation surfaced.
In response to these rumors, Ubisoft clarified that it had recently reallocated creative resources and adjusted priorities within its Quebec studio. As a result, some members of the Ubisoft Quebec team have moved on to work on "other unannounced projects." While Ubisoft did not directly address the status of the Immortals Fenyx Rising sequel, their statement implies that the development team has either been downsized or disbanded.
According to the initial report, Ubisoft's decision to cancel the sequel of Immortals Fenyx Rising was attributed to their strategic change focusing on larger franchises, such as Assassin's Creed. In response to the speculation, the developer-publisher did confirm that they are indeed implementing this company-wide transition.
Assuming that the sequel to Immortals Fenyx Rising has been abandoned, Ubisoft's reluctance to officially confirm its cancellation could be due to the fact that it never actually announced the follow-up to its Breath of the Wild-inspired game. In the past, the company has only mentioned canceled projects in its shareholder disclosures, rather than in responses to media inquiries. For instance, Ubisoft disclosed in January that it had canceled three unannounced games.
Regardless of what may happen to the Immortals Fenyx Rising sequel, it is not uncommon for the France-based gaming giant to cancel projects. In fact, since mid-2022, Ubisoft has canceled more than six games. The company may even decide to scrap additional titles in the upcoming months, as it continues to focus on its largest franchises through a strategic pivot.
