During the October 27 episode of their podcast "New Heights," Jason Kelce playfully acknowledged a fan's question about the books visible behind Travis, aged 34, in the recording. Jason, aged 35, jokingly asked Travis what they had back there, to which Travis replied, "Oh, s—t."
The Kansas City Chiefs' tight end swiftly turned his head to scan the titles. "Um, honestly? You all know I can't read," Travis joked, eliciting laughter from Jason.
In response, Jason indicated that The Odyssey could be found on the shelf. "Yes, it is. The Odyssey, is it worth reading?" Travis inquired.
Jason inquired about the protagonist's background, prompting Travis to make a guess at his name - Homer. However, Jason, a center on the Philadelphia Eagles, corrected him and revealed that the character's name is actually Odysseus. Jason further explained that Homer is believed to be the author of the epic, and that The Iliad and The Odyssey are based on a Greek tale that has evolved over time into a cohesive narrative.
Travis ignored his limited knowledge by transitioning to the next book in his assortment: The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F—k, authored by Mark Manson.
Jason chimed in, stating, "It's a valuable read, and I believe it encourages a significant approach to living one's life."
Travis, who hasn't read Manson's prose yet, openly admitted to experiencing that "syndrome." He elaborated, saying, "It's a complete syndrome of not caring at all... I don't need to read that book to understand it, and there's a certain art to it."
Jason observed that his brother was clearly mastering that "art," jokingly adding, "'You want to know how skilled I am at not giving a f—k? I didn't even read that book.'"
Jason persistently asked Travis for a compiled selection of his preferred books — ones he had genuinely read.
"Jason, it's been ages since I picked up a book," Travis confessed. "Man, I can't recall any of those titles. I vaguely remember coming across one called The Energy Bus. It was a brief and slender book, and it was actually recommended by our college coach, Butch Jones."
Jason reminded Travis about how seriously they used to take summer reading when they were younger, and mentioned that their dad, Ed Kelce, would occasionally pressure them to read.
Travis, on the other hand, reminisced about the Scholastic book fairs they used to attend as kids. "Those were the best. You know what I loved getting at the book fair? Posters. They always had this huge selection of sports posters," Travis shared, recalling how Ed would allow him to pick a poster as long as he also picked out a book.
Jason, who has three daughters with his wife Kylie Kelce, shared that he was a big fan of the Goosebumps series and particularly enjoyed the time-traveling one. On the other hand, Travis used to love the Captain Underpants series by Dav Pilkey and rocked out with it.
