The couple had an on-and-off relationship for five years following Nicole's initiation of contact by sending him a direct message on Instagram in 2017. Nicole disclosed through her Instagram Story in June 2022 that he had been following her and engaging in flirtatious behavior for a few months prior.
Despite Kelce indicating interest by liking several of her posts, he never took the initiative to send her a direct message. This prompted Nicole to take matters into her own hands. With a boost of confidence from @iqueenb, who encouraged her with something along the lines of "Why are you hesitating?", Nicole reached out to him on New Year's Day after a little bit of liquid courage.

Addressing black girls directly, Nicole spoke into the camera, revealing, "You may be called a traitor for falling in love. Nicole shared with People that her mental and physical health suffered greatly after experiencing a significant breakup and major life change in 2022, coinciding with her separation from Kelce. In the aftermath of this breakup, she made the decision to seek therapy in order to enhance her overall well-being.
Reflecting on her current situation, Nicole expressed gratitude for having sought therapy, acknowledging that she couldn't imagine how she would be coping without it. This remark seemingly touched on Kelce's involvement with Swift. Nicole also revealed that if she could speak to her past self, she would urge her to brace herself for the challenges of 2023, stating, "You thought you had already encountered the worst, but be prepared and gather every resource available because you'll definitely need them."
