Tottenham's last-minute victory over Liverpool does not make them title contenders, according to Gary Neville He questions their bench strength and predicts they will fall short of challenging for the Premier League title Neville's thoughts on Liverpool's resurgence are also discussed

Gary Neville firmly believes that despite being only one point behind Manchester City, Tottenham cannot be considered as genuine contenders for the Premier League title this season. In a captivating turn of events, Spurs managed to secure a nail-biting victory when Joel Matip inadvertently redirected Pedro Porro's cross into his own net during the sixth minute of added time, further solidifying their impressive start under newly-appointed manager Ange Postecoglou.

During the Gary Neville Podcast, Neville expressed his belief that they are not contenders for the title. He pointed out that their substitute bench indicates they are not in contention and predicts they will fall far from the title race. However, he acknowledges that they possess a spirited and unexpected resilience, citing their performance in the recent North London Derby as a testament to this.

"The team is in a favorable position. A sense of energy fills the stadium and the field, creating a strong bond between the manager, the players, and the spectators. The focus has shifted away from the boardroom at Spurs, unlike in previous years."

Spurs are definitely experiencing some positive developments. However, it is important to acknowledge that things may not always be as promising as they seem, and there might be obstacles to overcome in the future. Nevertheless, I am confident that Spurs will have a more successful season than I initially anticipated.

The Professional Game Match Officials Limited has admitted to a "significant human error" that occurred during Tottenham's victory over Liverpool. This error led to a disallowed goal by Luis Diaz in the 34th minute, wrongly judged as offside.

Neville: I've gone soft towards Liverpool

Referee Simon Hooper dismissed both Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota in successive halves, leaving Liverpool frustrated by the initial ruling out of Diaz's goal.

Diaz was released by Mohamed Salah, and he unleashed a powerful strike into the bottom corner. However, the raised offside flag and a swift VAR review conducted by Darren England at Stockley Park concluded that the Liverpool forward was indeed offside.

Despite still images suggesting that Cristian Romero played Diaz onside, Spurs took the lead just two minutes later as Heung-min Son scored. The disallowed 'goal' by Liverpool was deemed incorrect due to "significant human error," according to PGMOL.

Neville expressed his surprise at feeling sympathy for Liverpool, questioning why he wasn't celebrating with the Tottenham fans and rejoicing about Big Ange. He acknowledged the emotional toll that Matip, Jota, and Curtis Jones must be experiencing in the dressing room.

Liverpool showcased immense dedication and solidity in their performance. They exhibited resilience and possessed all the qualities one desires in a football team. It is easy for us to quickly criticize a team and claim that they are not giving their best, but that statement does not hold true for Jurgen Klopp's teams. In fact, the exact opposite was witnessed from Liverpool today.

The players displayed tremendous effort and determination, pushing themselves to their limits. Klopp's substitutions, the team's defensive tactics, and their ability to control the game all showcased their experience on the field. In the past, I have been critical of Liverpool's backline for conceding goals despite their experience. However, it is important to note that they had only allowed five goals before this particular match.

Are Liverpool back?

Neville added: "They have certainly shown great spirit and determination, which is a trademark of Klopp's teams. However, I don't believe they will be contenders for the title. Their midfield has adapted and settled in quicker than my expectations, but there may still be some challenges as they lack a true holding player. Overall, they find themselves in a fairly favorable position.

"Although Klopp may not mount a title challenge this season, with another transfer window or two, he could create something truly extraordinary. If players like Nunez, Diaz, Salah, Jota, Gakpo, and Gravenberch can continue to progress and develop this season, they could potentially be in a position next season to contend again with one or two additional acquisitions. They are not too far off from achieving that."

Klopp's position has improved since the transfer window, easing any concerns among Liverpool fans about the acquisition of the much-needed midfield players.
