Tottenham have set their sights on acquiring goalkeeper David Raya and are reportedly planning to initiate talks with Brentford regarding a potential transfer fee. Despite Brentford manager Thomas Frank valuing Raya at a substantial £40 million, both Spurs and Manchester United are hesitant to meet this valuation.
Raya has a year left on his contract and is unlikely to sign a new deal.
Tottenham's current No 1 Hugo Lloris has publicly said he wants to leave for a fresh challenge.
Tottenham is anticipated to have no issues with personal terms if they are able to come to an agreement with Raya. Brentford has a reputation for not settling for less than their player's valuation, as demonstrated when Spurs expressed interest in Ollie Watkins two years ago before he ultimately signed with Aston Villa for a fee of £33m.
Brentford has signed Mark Flekken from Freiburg, but they are willing to start the season with three goalkeepers, namely current No. 2 Thomas Strakosha, Flekken, and Raya. They plan to let Raya's contract run down, despite being a former target for Arsenal three years ago. Brentford had refused to sell Raya at that time, as they were gearing up for a successful promotion push.
Frank expressed his desire for Raya to stay with the team indefinitely, but acknowledged that the contract negotiations could pose a challenge. To keep Raya, Frank estimated that the team would need to offer a minimum of £40 million, and that figure would increase to £70 million if Raya had three years left on his contract.
"How much was Kepa? He is at least as good as him."
Analysis: From non-League Southport to one of the Premier League's best
We' Sam Blitz writes:
David Raya has been catching people's attention right from the beginning of his football career in England. During his trial at Blackburn 11 years ago, after just one training session, the club was so impressed that they swiftly signed the then-15-year-old from Spanish club Cornella for a modest fee of £10,000 - a figure that seems insignificant in retrospect.
Raya's value has been confirmed at £40m by his manager, Thomas Frank, and there is increasing speculation regarding potential interest from the 'Big Six' clubs in the upcoming summer transfer window. This comes as Raya approaches the final year of his contract.
