However, this is not an exclusive agreement, and Cruise is still working with Paramount while filming Mission: Impossible 8.
Things may not be smooth, per The Hollywood Reporter, the actor was displeased with Paramount's handling of various matters, including the initial 45-day theatrical window for Maverick and the release of M:I7 alongside Oppenheimer and Barbie, two films that dominated cultural attention. Puck mentions that Cruise's next movie after M:I 8 could be Top Gun 3, or he may first work on the Doug Liman space movie at Universal, which is still in active development (although NASA is involved, so the timing is uncertain).

It is still uncertain if actors like Jennifer Connelly, Monica Barbaro, Lewis Pullman, Jon Hamm, or Charles Parnell will return for their roles. Val Kilmer, whose character died in the sequel, is unlikely to appear in the new film.
During a previous interview with Dexerto, Barbaro and Pullman discussed the interest in Top Gun 3 and their potential return. Barbaro mentioned that Tom had been waiting for at least 30 years to begin discussing the possibility of creating a new film.
