Here is the full list of voice cast and characters for The Super Mario Bros Movie.
Chris Pratt: Super Mario
Marvel Studios/Universal Pictures
Chris Pratt provides the voice for Mario, a Brooklyn plumber who becomes the unlikely hero of Mushroom Kingdom after falling through a mysterious pipe into the magical new world.
When the news initially surfaced that the Guardians of the Galaxy star would be part of The Super Mario Bros Movie cast, some fans criticized the decision, claiming that he did not sound Italian. However, Pratt has since responded to the backlash, stating to Variety that although he was “surprised” by it, he hopes that “people will come into the movie with an open mind and that once they see the film, any criticism around Mario’s accent will disappear.”
He is also looking forward to potential sequels and spinoffs in the future, which is logical considering the abundance of content available. In addition to his work in the MCU, Pratt is recognized for his major franchise roles, including his portrayal of Owen Grady in the Jurassic World films like Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and the upcoming Jurassic World: Dominion.
Charlie Day: Luigi
FX/Universal Pictures
Mario just wouldn't be the same without his loyal brother Luigi, and actor Charlie Day will be taking on the important role. While the character is a personal favorite of Day's from his childhood, perfecting the voice was a challenge. In an interview, Day playfully mentioned, "They kept reminding me: 'This is Super Mario, not Goodfellas.' But finding the right voice is always a journey. When it comes to voice acting, you have to embrace a childlike sense of adventure and be open to trying anything."
Many of you will already know Day as Charlie Kelly on the FX comedy It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
Anya Taylor-Joy: Princess Peach
Netflix/Universal Pictures
Princess Peach – she’s sassy, she’s strong and she’s voiced by the Hollywood heavyweight Anya Taylor-Joy.
The 2023 version of the character still wears her pink dress and blonde locks, but has been updated at the insistence of Joy before she agreed to join the cast. In a conversation with Slash Film, the actress expressed that she felt "honored" but wanted Princess Peach to be "a modern ruler." Taylor-Joy explained that she wanted to create a more three-dimensional character with her own agency. Despite being a familiar face in the acting world with roles in a variety of movies and TV shows, she is not a stranger to the acting world. This includes Split, The Witch, The Queen's Gambit, and Peaky Blinders.
Jack Black: Bowser
Paramount Pictures/Universal Pictures
Jack Black, known for his high energy, is set to play the lead villain Bowser in the upcoming movie. During the reveal event at New York Comic Con in October 2022, Black hinted at bringing his musical talents to the role, mentioning that he incorporated some "rocking" into his performance as King Koopa.
When not performing on stage, Black infuses his distinctive humor into films like Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and Kung Fu Panda, and occasionally blends both in a manner reminiscent of School of Rock.
Keegan-Michael Key: Toad
NBC/Universal Pictures
Speaking of music, Keegan-Michael Key displays his vocal talents as he voices the anthropomorphic mushroom Toad in The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
In an interview with Variety, the actor, comedian, and Broadway star revealed that he had the opportunity to "improvise a song in Super Mario Bros.," describing the experience as "an absolute blast."
During the years 2012 to 2015, Key collaborated with Jordan Peele to co-create and co-star in Comedy Central's sketch series Key & Peele. Following this, he appeared in several TV shows such as Fargo and Parks and Recreation. Key also made his Broadway debut in the play Meteor Shower in 2017.
Seth Rogen: Donkey Kong
Universal Pictures
Seth Rogen is set to voice the strong yet easygoing ape in a potential spinoff movie, signaling exciting prospects for future projects. In a recent report by Dexerto, Rogen expressed interest in collaborating on new ventures involving the character, emphasizing the potential for expansion. "There's plenty of room for growth," he commented. "The Kong family dynamic is intriguing, and as the Fast and Furious franchise has shown us, family is a central theme."
Fred Armisen: Cranky Kong
Seth Rogen easily slipped into the role of the iconic ape with his natural, laid-back personality. In addition to his voice work in the Nintendo spinoff, the actor is famous for his comedic performances in movies like Superbad, Knocked Up, and Pineapple Express.
NBC/Universal Pictures
Donkey Kong’s grumbly grandfather Cranky Kong also makes an appearance, with Fred Armisen voicing the character.
The wisecracking primate is commonly recognized as Donkey's grandfather in the video game series, but there has been confusion among fans due to a translated character description in the movie referring to him as Donkey's father. Nevertheless, it appears that the character will maintain the same grumpy energy he is known for.
Aside from his acting career, Armisen is a regular drummer for The 8G Band on Late Night with Seth Meyers and is also a former cast member of Saturday Night Live.
