The Vampire Diaries
, death doesn't always mean the end, as many characters return as spirits or ghosts with a purpose.
Characters such as Vicki, Rose-Marie, and Lexi frequently reappear as ghosts or spirits throughout the show. Additionally, Mason, Sheila, Kol, and Frederick also make comebacks from the Other Side to seek vengeance or aid their beloved ones.
In Mystic Falls, a town filled with supernatural beings, death isn't always the end for characters in The Vampire Diaries. While some, like Jenna Sommers, stay dead, fan-favorites, such as Lexi Branson and Vicki Donovan, often make dramatic returns.
Typically, deceased characters in the show come back as either spirits or ghosts. These ethereal beings have two main motivations for their return: to assist someone or seek vengeance on the person responsible for their demise. When supernatural beings perish, they cross over to a realm known as the Other Side, separated from the physical world by a mysterious veil. While ghosts and spirits make sporadic appearances throughout the series, it's in season 3's episode "Ghost World" that the majority of deceased characters briefly resurface in the realm of the living.
10 Vicki Donovan
Vicki, a troubled soul with an absent father and an alcoholic mother, relies on her younger brother Matt as her only true family. She is transformed into a vampire by Damon in season 1, and her already volatile personality intensifies, making her a significant threat.
In The Vampire Diaries, despite being a part of the main cast, Vicki meets an early demise. However, she resurfaces as a determined ghost in season 3, yearning to return to the physical world. In season 5, Vicki returns once again as a ghost, but this time her purpose is to warn Matt about a horrifying event occurring on the Other Side. Despite her initial unlikeable qualities, Vicki redeems herself during her final appearance as a spirit from Hell, when she rings the Maxwell Bell. Following her ultimate demise, she is able to find tranquility and move forward.
9 Rose-Marie
8 Annabelle
Rose is an incredibly loyal friend and caring individual who, unlike her fellow vampires, does not derive pleasure from ending human lives. For centuries, she and her closest friend, Trevor, have been on the run from the Original family. Their nomadic existence takes an unexpected turn when they learn about the existence of a Petrova doppelgänger in the town of Mystic Falls. In season 2 of The Vampire Diaries, Rose-Marie makes her first appearance, where she kidnaps Elena with the hopes of exchanging her for Trevor's freedom. Unfortunately, Rose's fate is sealed early on in the series when she falls victim to a werewolf bite. However, her story doesn't end there. In season 3, Rose reappears as a ghost from the Other Side. It is during this time that she finally finds peace, as she is no longer forced to live a life filled with constant anxiety and evasion.
Annabelle, an unscrupulous and scheming vampire, stops at nothing to free her mother from her sealed tomb. She makes her debut in season 1 of The Vampire Diaries by befriending Jeremy Gilbert in order to acquire the Gilbert device, a artefact capable of liberating her mother. However, fate takes a twist as she unexpectedly falls in love with Jeremy, only to be murdered by his uncle, John Gilbert. In season 3, Annabelle returns as a ghost and warns Jeremy about the nefarious plans of Vicki. The final time we see her in The Vampire Diaries is in the episode "Ghost World" of season 3, where she at long last reunites with her mother.
7 Alexia "Lexi" Branson
Lexi is a beloved character in The Vampire Diaries, making her debut in season 1. She serves as Stefan's lively best friend and acts as his moral compass when he succumbs to his Ripper side. Similar to Vicki, Lexi meets an untimely demise early on in the series but continues to make occasional appearances as a ghost. Damon stakes Lexi in season 1 as a means to blame her for the vampire-related deaths in Mystic Falls. Even in death, Lexi remains a significant presence through the constant mentions made by Stefan and Elena.
In season 3 of The Vampire Diaries, Lexi reemerges as a ghost when the barrier between dimensions known as the Other Side weakens. Her primary objective upon returning is to guide Elena in aiding Stefan as he battles his inner Ripper. She makes another appearance in season 4, spending whatever time she has left in the physical world with Stefan. In season 5, Lexi appears as a ghost on the Other Side and saves Damon, ensuring his reunion with Stefan before Bonnie lifts the veil. Lastly, her final appearance takes place in the season 8 finale, appropriately titled "I Was Feeling Epic," where she warmly welcomes Stefan to the Other Side following his passing.
6 Mason Lockwood
5 Sheila 'Grams' Bennett
The Lockwoods, a prominent family in Mystic Falls, are carriers of the werewolf gene. Mason Lockwood, Tyler's laid-back uncle, makes his debut in season 2 of The Vampire Diaries when he arrives in Mystic Falls in search of the Moonstone. Unfortunately, he meets his demise in the same season when Damon ruthlessly rips out his heart. However, Mason returns as a vengeful ghost in the episode "Smells Like Teen Spirit" during season 3, seeking retribution against Damon. In his final appearance in season 3, Mason comes back to aid Tyler and joins forces with Damon and Alaric to eliminate Klaus and finally liberate Tyler. Regrettably, he is sent to the Other Side before he can complete his mission.
The Bennett witches are a crucial element in The Vampire Diaries right from the start. Sheila, Bonnie's straight-talking grandmother who despises vampires, plays a prominent role alongside Lexi throughout the series. Sheila and Bonnie team up to perform a powerful spell that becomes overwhelming for Bonnie, leading to Sheila's peaceful passing in season 1. She later reappears as a ghost in season 3, after the veil to the Other Side is lifted. Sheila aids Bonnie in destroying the original witch's talisman before returning to the Other Side. In season 4, Sheila makes another appearance to caution Bonnie against dabbling in dark magic.
4 Kol Mikaelson
In The Vampire Diaries season 5, Sheila makes a brief appearance to alert Bonnie about the Other Side's impending danger and to bid her final farewells. She meets her permanent end in the season 8 finale of The Vampire Diaries as she, alongside the other Bennett witches, aids Bonnie in successfully performing the Hell Fire Manipulation spell to rescue Mystic Falls.
The youngest sibling of the Original family, Kol Mikaelson, captivates fans with his charming and carefree demeanor. He makes his debut in the third season when his older brother Niklaus releases him from his undaggered state. Regrettably, Kol's time on The Vampire Diaries is cut short as he meets his demise in season 4, succumbing to Jeremy's fatal blow with the White Oak Stake piercing his heart. In season 5, Kol briefly returns as a ghost on the Other Side, crossing paths with Matt, who seeks Vicki's spirit. However, Kol advises Matt to release the departed. The fifth season marks Kol's final appearance in The Vampire Diaries before he transitions to The Originals.
3 Connor Jordan
Connor Jordan, a member of the Brotherhood of the Five, is a formidable vampire hunter. He makes his appearance in season 4 of The Vampire Diaries, arriving in Mystic Falls with the pretense of investigating the deaths of the Town Council members. Connor possesses a clandestine hunter's tattoo that can only be fully realized through the elimination of vampires. However, Elena foils his plans by killing him before his tattoo is completed. Later in the series, Connor returns as a ghost in pursuit of the cure, aiming to use it alongside the rest of the Brotherhood to vanquish Silas. Nevertheless, Connor's presence is banished back to the Other Side once the veil is reinstated.
2 Pearl
Pearl, Anna's mother and Katherine's closest companion, finds herself sealed together with 25 other vampires beneath Fells Church's tomb by Emily Bennett, Bonnie's ancestor. In season 1 episode of The Vampire Diaries titled "Fool Me Once," Anna successfully rescues Pearl, allowing her to escape the confines of the tomb. Unlike most vampires, Pearl is a compassionate being who abstains from feeding on human blood and instead sustains herself on blood bags. However, her time in Mystic Falls comes to a tragic end when John Gilbert kills her as she attempts to flee the town. In season 3, Pearl returns as a ghost and experiences a joyous reunion with her daughter, Anna.
1 Frederick
Frederick, who is among the 26 vampires trapped in the tomb by Emily Bennett, is a merciless vampire who shows no hesitation in expressing his rage when things don't go his way. In the first season of The Vampire Diaries, there is a flashback revealing Damon and Stefan ending the life of Frederick's beloved. Later, in the show's third season, Frederick reappears as a vengeful ghost, seeking to eliminate the Salvatore brothers and the descendants of those accountable for his imprisonment. However, he is ultimately banished back to the Other Side before causing any significant harm.
