Summary
Characters in The Umbrella Academy frequently die and come back to life due to time travel and flashbacks.
In Season 4, there may be a higher number of resurrections, although considering it's the last season, death could potentially become more irreversible. Throughout the series, characters such as Abigail, Ben, and Reginald have managed to evade death on numerous occasions.
In the intricate narrative of The Umbrella Academy, numerous characters have met their demise on-screen, only to make unexpected comebacks later in the series. With elements like time travel, Klaus' supernatural ability to communicate with the deceased, and flashbacks, very few named characters in The Umbrella Academy have remained permanently deceased throughout the show's three seasons. They have returned multiple times, causing confusion as each season takes place in a different universe.
As The Umbrella Academy gears up for its fourth season, it is likely that we will witness more resurrections of characters that audiences believed were gone for good. The conclusion of season 3 hinted at this possibility. However, since the fourth season will mark the final chapter in the Hargreeves family saga, death may have a more lasting impact going forward. Nevertheless, several significant characters in the series have managed to evade death through various means, with a few individuals even experiencing multiple deaths and resurrections.

13 Abigail Hargreeves
Abigail Hargreeves, the wife of the peculiar collector of super-powered children, Reginald Hargreeves, is already deceased when the series begins. In season 1, a flashback provides a glimpse of her on her deathbed, consoling a young Reginald. This pivotal scene occurs on their home planet and later in season 2, it is revealed that Hargreeves himself is an extraterrestrial.
12 Ben Hargreeves
In another flashback, Abigail makes an appearance, taking us back to the time Luther spent on the moon. During his exploration, Luther encounters an artificial barrier that prevents him from moving forward. Beyond this barrier, he discovers the cryogenically preserved body of Abigail, raising doubts about Reginald's true intentions for Luther's presence on the moon. By the end of season 3, it appears that Reginald has successfully revived his late wife, as a living Abigail finally appears on-screen due to Allison's manipulation of the timeline.Ben, another character of significant importance, had died before the series began. He was among the initial group of super-powered children recruited by Reginald. Throughout most of the series, he held the role of Klaus' loyal companion, as he was the only one capable of communicating with Klaus through his medium abilities. While he claimed to have remained on the earthly plane due to unresolved matters, it was later revealed that Ben was afraid to move on, and Klaus had pleaded with him to stay. Towards the conclusion of season 2, Ben manages to reach out to Viktor, assisting him in gaining control over his powers. Ultimately, Ben bravely embraces his demise, accepting it and transitioning into the afterlife.
Ben makes a triumphant return in season 3, but this time in an alternate timeline. In this reality, Reginald diverges from his previous choice and adopts a different group of superpowered individuals. These new circumstances lead to Ben being adopted once again, but under different conditions. As a member of the Sparrow Academy, Ben develops a distinctively less friendly demeanor. The post-credits scene of season 3 offers a glimpse of this transformed Ben, now leading a new life and dressed in professional attire. Interestingly, he is seen riding the very same train that holds the enigmatic origins of his birth.
11 Reginald Hargreeves
The initiator, Reginald Hargreeves, was the one responsible for instigating the events of The Umbrella Academy. His demise at the beginning of season 1 serves as the catalyst for reuniting the Hargreeves siblings. Reginald's enigmatic plans to foster seven out of the forty-three super-powered children, who were born to women across the globe without being pregnant the day before, remain a mystery, intensifying the questioning surrounding his death. Throughout season 1, flashbacks showcase Reginald's severe upbringing of the children, shedding light on the origins of their present-day traumas.
The grown children encounter Reginald when they journey back in time to the 60s in another endeavor to avert the apocalypse. Unfortunately, their initial interaction with the peculiar extraterrestrial leaves much to be desired, prompting him to alter the course of history and establish the Sparrow Academy instead. Reginald cunningly coerces his offspring into assisting him with an enigmatic initiative called Project Oblivion, which aims to reset the universe. Despite Allison's act of killing him just before the reset, he seemingly reappears in the new timeline alongside his deceased wife, occupying a position of authority within the alternate reality.
10 Dave Katz
When Klaus is abducted by the enigmatic time-travel agency, The Temps Commission, he liberates himself by pilfering one of their briefcases, inadvertently propelling himself into the turmoil of the Vietnam War. Amidst the chaos, he develops an affectionate bond with a comrade-in-arms named Dave, who unfortunately loses his life in battle. Following Number Five's erratic temporal manipulation, Klaus finds himself transported back to the 1960s once more, affording him another opportunity to cross paths with Dave. Regrettably, Klaus's overbearing demeanor leads him to vehemently dissuade the younger Dave from enlisting, despite their unfamiliarity. Although Dave nominally returns, Klaus ultimately fails to avert his tragic destiny.
9 Pogo
A fascinating individual, Pogo was an adored chimp who underwent experimental procedures conducted by Reginald Hargreeves, resulting in the acquisition of human-like intellect. In the original timeline, Pogo assumed the role of the Umbrella Academy's spiritual successor to Reginald, serving as its esteemed headmaster. Tragically, Pogo meets his demise at the hands of Viktor, consumed by uncontrollable rage once he discovers Pogo's involvement in Reginald's mistreatment of him. This involvement includes Pogo administering a "medicine" to suppress Viktor's dangerous abilities. Interestingly, Pogo resurfaces within the Sparrow timeline, having severed ties with Hargreeves and embraced a new profession as a tattoo artist, intimately associated with a biker gang.
8 Grace
Known affectionately as "Mom" by many members of the Umbrella Academy, Grace is an artificial humanoid created by Hargreeves to care for the children. The original Grace is destroyed when Viktor goes on a rampage, causing the Hargreeves estate to collapse. However, when Diego travels to the 60s, he unexpectedly encounters Grace with her familiar face.
7 The Handler
: The android, named Grace, turned out to be a replica of Hargreeves' previous partner with the same name. This partner had played a crucial role in helping Hargreeves oversee the development of the program responsible for creating Pogo. However, at the insistence of Diego, the human Grace departs from Hargreeves after learning about his connection to the JFK assassination. Although a subsequent mechanical Grace is constructed for the Sparrow Academy, this time Hargreeves customizes her to serve a purpose beyond mere mothering.
The Handler, the enigmatic and manipulative woman known only by this name, is the sole recurring villain in the series who can rival Reginald Hargreeves himself. She starts off as the head of the Temps Commission. Although seemingly killed in season 1 by rogue Temps agent Hazel, who abandons his duties to protect his new wife and lead a simple life, The Handler surprisingly resurfaces when the Umbrella Academy travels back to the '60s. However, her survival comes at a cost as she has been demoted, which she considers an even worse fate.
After successfully scheming with Number Five to eliminate the commission's board members and seize ultimate executive power, The Handler betrays the Hargreeves siblings. Employing the entire might of the Temps Commission, she makes a desperate bid to capture the newly-empowered Harlan, nearly succeeding in eliminating all of them. However, her own life is abruptly ended by the vengeful Swede's gunfire. Intriguingly, The Handler's role in the plot may be more profound than initially suspected, leading to the likelihood of her resurrection above any other deceased characters in season 4.
6 All Of The Hargreeves Siblings And Lila
During the intense climax of Season 2, the Handler cunningly outsmarts the Hargreeves siblings and even her own adopted daughter, Lila, while they seek refuge on the Coopers's farm. Without any ceremony, she ruthlessly eliminates them all with her firearm, causing all the siblings and Lila to technically lose their lives. However, Five manages to survive, clinging to life just long enough to recall Reginald's advice and utilize his powers on a smaller scale. With a glimpse into the future, Five disarms The Handler and completely turns the tables on her, effectively resurrecting all of his siblings and Lila in the process.
5 Raymond Chestnut
When Allison finds herself transported to an unspecified moment in the early 1960s and separated from her siblings, she crosses paths with the passionate civil rights activist, Raymond Chestnut. As time passes, Allison's feelings for Raymond deepen, leading to their marriage and eventual settlement together. However, their bond is tragically severed when Allison's past catches up to her, resulting in her forced return to the future without Raymond. Throughout the third season, Raymond continues to appear in Allison's dreams and hallucinations, representing her profound grief and internal struggle caused by the loss of her husband. Unfortunately, Raymond's demise from natural causes during the time gap adds to Allison's emotional turmoil. Remarkably, Raymond makes a corporeal return after Allison successfully resets the universe.
4 Claire
In the original timeline, Allison lost custody of her daughter, Claire, when her husband discovered her using her powers of suggestion on the young girl. However, upon Allison's return from the '60s, she was confronted with a reality where Claire no longer existed, due to the premature death of Allison's grandmother. Determined to reunite with her daughter, Allison found herself taking care of a new version of Claire alongside her second husband, Ray, after successfully resetting the timeline.
3 Luther Hargreeves
Referred to as Number One, Luther held the title of the top-ranking member in the Umbrella Academy, not because of his extraordinary power, but rather because of his usefulness to his father. His naivete often led him to blindly obey Reginald's commands. Ironically, Luther was the sole member of the Umbrella Academy to meet his demise at the hands (or tentacles) of Reginald himself. This was blamed on the enigmatic guardians of Hotel Oblivion.
Fortunately, Luther experienced a brief resurrection thanks to Klaus. During his limited time back in the mortal world, Luther managed to defeat the actual guardian, expose his father's betrayal to his siblings, and bid a final farewell to his newly-married wife. Through Allison's manipulation of the secret dias in the Hotel Oblivion, the timeline was reset, granting Luther permanent life and allowing him to embrace his new human form.
2 Klaus' Mom
1 Klaus
When the Hargreeves siblings traverse timelines once again, they discover themselves in a realm where Reginald Hargreeves had chosen to adopt different individuals instead of them, citing their undesirable conduct as adults. However, the Umbrella Academy soon unravels the truth that even if Reginald had desired to do so, he would have been unable to adopt them in this alternate timeline. The forsaken Harlan, fueled by the powers bestowed upon him by Viktor, inadvertently brings about the demise of their mothers in a fit of blind fury. Nonetheless, during one of his journeys to the other side, Klaus manages to communicate with his mother, although whether it was truly her or an enigmatic entity manifesting through her remains uncertain.
Out of all The Umbrella Academy's cast members, no one has become more intimately acquainted with death than Klaus. Initially believed to possess the ability to communicate with and occasionally summon spirits, the true extent of Klaus' powers is unveiled in season 3. When he is inadvertently slain by Stan, Deigo's son, who was fooling around with a speargun, Klaus awakens in a peculiar afterlife where he converses with a mysterious girl. In this ethereal realm, Klaus discovers the truth behind his own existence, realizing that the numerous "near-death experiences" he has encountered throughout his life were, in fact, genuine deaths.
Reginald tried to assist Klaus in enhancing his skill, engaging in a comically grim training montage. As Klaus continued to refine his ability, his revival time shortened significantly from 22 minutes to under 2. However, when Reginald betrayed him, intending to neutralize this power through the Kugelblitz's cosmic force, Klaus managed to kill and resurrect himself just in time to avoid destruction. This resurrection proved to be exceptionally significant, as Klaus' immortality played a pivotal role in the overarching storyline of The Umbrella Academy.
