Summary
Joey's spinoff failed because it strayed too far from the character that made him lovable in Friends, losing what made him special in the first place.
In the spinoff, Joey's lack of chemistry with the other characters made his previously endearing stupidity in Friends more annoying. The show couldn't succeed solely on Joey's character as the cast and characters surrounding him were not as compatible or appealing as the ensemble cast in Friends.
Joey, the spinoff connected to the widely popular sitcom Friends, remains one of the most overlooked spinoffs in television history, despite its close association with a highly referenced and discussed show that continues to captivate audiences even two decades after its final episode. Friends debuted in 1994 and achieved immense success, largely due to its talented cast, featuring Jennifer Aniston as Rachel Green, Courteney Cox as Monica Geller, Lisa Kudrow as Phoebe Buffay, Matt LeBlanc as Joey Tribbiani, Matthew Perry as Chandler Bing, and David Schwimmer as Ross Geller. Consequently, when Friends concluded in 2004, NBC made the decision to create a spinoff centered around one of its six beloved characters - Joey.
Joey premiered shortly after the finale of Friends, reintroducing Matt LeBlanc in his iconic role as Joey Tribbiani. Following the character's departure from New York City in the final season of Friends, Joey relocates to Los Angeles to advance his acting career. As dedicated viewers may recall, the NBC comedy series wrapped up with Chandler and Monica happily married with twins, Ross and Rachel finally together, and Phoebe joyfully wedded to Mike. Only Joey remained without a definitive happy ending, providing the perfect foundation for a spinoff centered around his character. Sadly, Joey failed to match the success of its predecessor.
Joey Forgot What Made The Character Special
The Friends spinoff Joey failed for multiple reasons. It only lasted two seasons and received unfavorable reviews and terrible ratings. NBC canceled the comedy television show on August 23, 2006, citing low ratings as the reason for pulling it from the network. The main reason for the spinoff's cancellation was the steady decrease in viewership over the episodes. However, there were numerous factors that contributed to the show losing its audience from week to week. One of these factors was the deviation of Joey's personality in Joey from the well-developed character audiences knew from the popular NBC sitcom. Additionally, the relationships Joey had with other Friends characters, like Chandler and Phoebe, were part of what made his character loved. Once these relationships were removed and Joey started interacting with new characters in Hollywood, it became challenging for viewers to adjust. People were initially drawn to watch Joey because of their love for Friends, but the spinoff failed to capture what made Joey lovable in the original series.
Joey Made Its Star Too Stupid
Joey's affable nature was one of his greatest qualities in Friends, and it became more prominent as the seasons progressed. Despite his naivety, which was endearing, it perfectly complemented the sarcasm of Chandler, the cheerfulness of Rachel, the easygoing attitude of Phoebe, the perfectionism of Monica, and the impatience of Ross. This combination created a recipe for comedy, even though Joey's dumb comments became the subject of jokes towards the end of the NBC sitcom series. However, Joey's stupidity reached a level that was more annoying than funny and lovable.
The whole dynamic of the Friends cast played a crucial role in Joey's character. Although his occasional dumb moments were notable, they were perfectly balanced with the personalities of the other five characters. Joey's naivety only added charm when contrasted with Rachel, Monica, Phoebe, Chandler, and Ross. Without their presence, Joey's stupid comments lost their humor. Unfortunately, the cast of the Friends spinoff lacked the compatibility with Joey's character that the other five characters had, resulting in Joey's storyline falling short.
Joey Couldn't Sustain A Show By Himself
Although every character in Friends was beloved and had their own unique qualities, choosing Matt LeBlanc's Joey as the lead character for a spinoff was not the best decision. The network was limited in their options, as they would have had to convince other cast members to lead a new show. It would not have worked to have a spinoff with just one character from each couple, such as Ross without Rachel, Monica without Chandler, or Phoebe without Mike. So, they went with Joey, but unfortunately, it was still a mistake.
Joey was certainly funny, charming, and easy to root for in Friends, but it is difficult to say that he was the best character among the talented ensemble. Part of what made him and the other characters great was their chemistry with each other. Unfortunately, the cast of Joey was not on par with the Friends cast, and the supporting characters did not enhance his appeal like the Central Perk crew did. We can't say for certain if a spinoff featuring Chandler or Phoebe would have been successful, but it was evident that Joey alone couldn't carry a show.
Joey Just Wasn't As Funny As Friends
Joey ultimately failed because its jokes fell flat compared to the success of Friends. The original sitcom set a high standard for comedy, making it difficult for the spinoff to measure up. Disappointingly, the humor in Joey couldn't match the comedic brilliance of its predecessor. The cast of characters, including Drea de Matteo as Gina Tribbiani, Andrea Anders as Alexis "Alex" Garrett, Paulo Costanzo as Michael Tribbiani, Jennifer Coolidge as Roberta "Bobbie" Morganstern, Miguel A. Núñez Jr. as Zach Miller, and Ben Falcone as Howard Peckerman, simply couldn't replicate the hilarity of the original crew.
It's worth noting that the writers behind Joey were not the same as those from Friends. Consequently, the comedic tone between the two NBC shows was noticeably different, which disappointed fans who had previously loved the original series. The absence of Friends co-creators and producers Marta Kauffman and David Crane in the spinoff undoubtedly played a role in Joey's downfall.
