Disney continues to dominate the global box office despite facing some prominent recent disappointments. As the owner of popular brands like Lucasfilm, Marvel, and Pixar, the media conglomerate has a strong foothold in the industry. However, this summer has brought some challenges for them. Pixar's latest film, Elemental, had a lukewarm performance at the box office, even falling behind their previous flop, Lightyear from 2022. Similarly, Lucasfilm's Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny struggled to meet early opening weekend projections and may have difficulty recouping its massive budget of over $250 million.
Despite these setbacks, Deadline reports that Disney still holds the top spot in the box office chart for 2023 thus far. From January 1 to July 2, the company has amassed an impressive $3.4 billion in global box office revenue, with $1.35 billion of that coming from the domestic market. This figure surpasses the combined box office earnings of rival companies such as Paramount ($871 million), Warner Bros. Discovery ($898 million), and Sony ($1.1 billion).
